Lets take a closer look at the AK47 (and other surplus military arms).

Are they only for soldiers and criminals?????????

In 1903 President Roosevelt persuaded congress to pass acts creating the National Matches and the National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice.

In 1905 Congress passed laws allowing the Army to sell "surplus military" rifles to Americans. The DCM (Division of Civilian Marksmanship) program was started to provide instruction to civilians in the use of military firearms and selling these rifles to American Citizens.

In 1996 the DCM was changed to the CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program), basically the CMP is run by civilians under charter of congress, to continue the program of the DCM except now the CMP receives no federal funs (as the DCM did), but funds its marksmanship programs with the sales of surplus rifles and equipment.

Where does the AK come in? The CMP, to adhere to their charter conducts Clinics and Matches across the country. Called the GSM or Garand, Springfield and (other) military clinics and matches.

Understanding not everyone shoots vintage military rifles, the CMP created a category called Modern Military, that being AKs, SKS's AR's M1A's etc etc.

Not everyone can afford a AR or M1A as their prices are normally much higher then AKs and SKS's. Allowing such guns allows everyone to participate in the CMP programs, keeping CMP Shooting Games from being a "rich man's sport".

I'm a CMP Master Instructor, I put on CMP GSM Clinics and Matches, I see a lot of Non-Soldiers, non-criminals, compete with AKs and similar rifles.

To say AK's or similar rifles have no use outside of the military is to be un-informed at best. For a setting president to make such a comment is rather odd, seems like he would know about the charters of congress (pasted during a period when a member of his party was president) commanding the CMP to conduct marksmanship activities with such rifles.

As long as the firearm is used in a legal and safe manner what difference does the type of firearms make? Does it really matter if the 30-06 I'm shooting is a Savage 110 or a BAR?

Conversely, IS there a type of firearm that is sanctioned by the Government for criminal use? Do you really care if you are being robbed by someone with a Remington 870 with a 20" barrel or a Remington 870 with a 16" barrel? This is just the usual political diversion tactic.

Many anti-gun people will try and divide us gun owners. They will go after the "evil black rifles" hoping that the hunters, that don't use EBR's will back it. They tried to do likewise with high capacity magazines after the AZ shooting. Just make the rest of the shooting community feel safe because "no one needs a 33 round magazine". "As long as no one goes after my Revolver/bolt action rifle/shot gun, I'm for the restricting of EBR's/semi-auto pistols/SBR/etc".

The funny part is that they keep trying this but the shooting community, for the most part has caught on to their less than sneaky plan and know that if you are willing to let other shooters have their rights removed that it isn't a stretch to have their rights removed later.

I was reading comments on a gun control article yesterday. It seemed as if every third post went something like this:

"I own guns for hunting and target shooting. I used to belong to the NRA, but quit when it was taken over by radical extremists. No one needs assualt rifles or high capacity magazines."

Methinks 98% of those posts were by hardcore anti-gun people to give some false impression. I'd go as far as to suggest that it's an organized effort.

How about this:

"I used to belong to Sarah Brady's group wanting to ban the private ownership of firearms. I hated guns and swore that I would never own one. Then I was mugged and my daughter was raped. Now I won't leave the house without a semiautomatic pistol with a high capacity magazine. The police can't protect us, so I do the protection myself. I will never be mugged again, and my daughter will be safe from any predatory criminal."

2nd A about hunting

So did the last guy, who ran in 2004,who claimed he "hunted deer by crawling on my belly with my double barrel shotgun"

He was wearing some "hunting gear" with the tags still attached, probably going to bring it back after the photo op.

The plan is to divide the shooting community into as many ringe groups as possible. I have heard a hunter say there is no need for them guns. It made me sick. I said I don't hunt but you have the rprivlage to hunt and I have the right to any firearm I can afford. He didn't get it tillI explained hunting is not a right. Trap shooters dont like the Tac shooting matches at our gun club. They have no personel dislike for any one individual, just the whole shoot a bunch of cardboard targets as fast as you can thing. I once belonged to a club that some of the "outdoorsmen members" complained about pulling the trigger too fast. I said you dont pull the trigger on this gun you squeeze it. See what I am getting at. Divide and conquer. I have read hunting magazines there is no divide tatice that I have seen there. I just don't know why some gun owners let themselves be dividers and divided. Where does it come from? Isn't a gun a gun. I think some think sport tatical firearms brings heat on their guns. Not true remember when someone wanted to ban "sniper rifles" or hunting rifles, They want all the guns, then bows and then knives.
Why isn't sport shooting including USPSA, IDPA, PPC, CMP, and all the other numerous organized matches ever mentioned, just hunting. There are more casual shooters than hunters and match shooters. We (action shooting sports shooters) need to have more exposure. The NRA seldom mentions any other discipline other than their own. USPSA should have commercials and magazine ads. People out of the know should be able to see there is more to guns than hunting and protection. There needs to be basis on gun ownership for sake of gun ownership, not just hunting. Nothing aginst hunting I enjoy duck hunting as much as anyone even though I have not had a chance to go for several years. Where is the coverage on Olympic shooting sports, they showed rowing for Petes sake not even a mention of the shooting events.
