Observations in shooting my 15-22 as an SBR

I had already packaged up my barrel to send it to Adco, so I no longer have one to measure. Anyone out there want to measure?

16.5"

My 1522 is 16.5. So is my Sig and Savage.

For those wondering how to measure bbl length, just close the bolt and run a cleaning rod from the muzzle till it hits the bolt face. Mark, then pull out rod and measure. If you have a muzzle device it's still only measured to the end of barrel, not the end of muzzle device unless its pinned or otherwise permanently attached. But permanently attached muzzle devices would not be applicable here since SW does sell the 1522 in such a configuration.

I have a Sparrow and have used it and another can a lot on a 4.5" Ruger MK2 and 16 inch 10/22. I also have a 5.5 inch 10/22. For 16 inch barrels I only use sub sonics if I don't want a sonic crack, Winchester dyna-points also run without a crack. Subsonic ammo in the best of times has always been hard to find for me.

I really like the 4.5 inch barrel because the bulk high vel. stuf stays sub sonic. For me it is very quiet. I never "Waste" sub sonic ammo in any short barrel. CCI standard vel also works well in the 4,5 inch, I can't remember what it does in the 16 inch. For me standard vel is also harder to find than high vel.
For the 1522 I believe changing to the lighter mainspring would be a good choice for a 4.5 barrel. For the OP since you really only wanted to shoot the sub sonic ammo the longer than 4.5 was the better choice for you since the longer barrel will give you the extra impulse.

The silencerco sparrow spec threads are longer than .400 since the un threaded section is on the end. I think the total length is .470. For me the benefit of the unthreaded section that engages the O ring is that it keeps the can from unscrewing while shooting.

If anyone has the factory barrel and want the o ring engagement you can buy the Silencerco adapter that is made to go on the longer threads, the other end of the adapter has the shorter threads with o ring engagement for the Sparrow.

I just mailed off a letter to the BATFE notifying them of the change of my barrel length & overall length on the form 1. If you research online, some folks state you need to do this while others say it is not necessary. Since this is a permanent change & the form 1 states you shall notify the BATFE of any change to the description of that firearm, I sent them the letter & copy of the form 1.

Per the NFA ATF Frequently Asked Questions - note the BOLDED section, since the question is a bit different from your situation, redneck:

Q: May the short barrel on an SBR or SBS be replaced with a long barrel for hunting or other purposes, with the intent of replacing the short barrel?

Yes, and you will not be required to again register the firearm before replacing the short barrel. ATF recommends written notification to the NFA Branch when a firearm’s configuration is permanently changed or removed from the purview of the NFA.

NOTE, it is only a RECOMMENDATION. There is NO REQUIREMENT.

As a general rule, if a company recommends an action, then I normally follow their suggestion. Seems to me, this notification will preclude future issues if the gun were to be transferred, since the gun would not match what is in the registry. To me, the recommendation is for our benefit... not necessarily the BATFE's.

Since this is a permanent change, I think it wise to have the registry match the firearm. Just makes sense to me & I see no downside. Only costs me 48 cents postage.

Got my barrel back from Adco today. I sent them a factory threaded barrel from a 15-22 & had then re-thread to SilercerCo's specs with O-Ring engagement. Adco states they have to cut off the factory threads to do this & I was concerned my barrel might come back shorter than 16"... and thus require a form 1.

We have determined the 16" barrel on the 15-22 is actually longer than 16". More like 16.5". Well my barrel came back threaded perfectly & is a bit over 16.25" long. Makes me think they didn't cut off all the old threads.

The factory 1522 threads are .6. The barrel is 16.5. They just shortened up the existing threads. Either that, or used a barrel stretcher. :D

My thought is they didn't cut off all the factory threads but left some, about 1/4", which would become the O-Ring engagement section... the part that is smooth with no threads. Then from there, they cut new threads.

Hey guys I've been on the forum for awhile, but I'm not sure I've ever posted anything. I am the one who exchanged barrels with Jim but had to wait for my Element to clear in order to shoot with the new barrel. I recently purchased the slidefire kit from grab a gun and shot the rifle. I experienced no problems with FTF or FTE. I shot about 500 rounds all suppressed, about half Blazer and half Norma. I was using the CMC trigger and mag dumps were very easy and consistent.

I just asked in another thread if anyone was shooting subsonics suppressed with the Slide Fire. Good to know it worked for you. I will try myself soon as mine comes in. I'm sure I'll use it on my carbine length 15-22 & not my SBR.

I never saw if any of the round #2 FTF ever had a strike on it from the firing pin??
