Sometime in the mid to late 70s I bought a little 2" J frame that was like the original Model 60 (.38 Special), but had an adjustable rear sight and about the tallest front sight you have ever seen. Wish I still had it - it was a pretty neat little gun. My memory isn't what it used to be, but I think it was a Model 50? Has anyone else seen one of these little guys and can you shed a little light on this model? Thanks.

they made a run of Model 60's with 2" barrels and adjustable sights.

When you say it was "like the original Model 60," are you saying it was stainless steel? If it was on the other hand blued, then we are talking about a Chiefs Special Target, which was ultimately designated the Model 50.

If stainless, this is a model 60-1, 660 produced in 1985. If blue, a model 50 or Chiefs Special Target, a fairly rare gun.

Thanks for the replies guys. I must have had a blonde moment. It was blued, not stainless like the M60, so I guess it was a Model 50.

I have a model 50 made around 1974 serial #993JX, if this helps. A limited run on model 36s with target sights.

Thanks to everyone for the information. It was definitely a Model 50 alright. Wish I still had it.

S&W has shown some inconsistences in naming this gun. Originally they were Chief Special Targets, so 1957 they became a m36 target. About 1969 somebody at the factory must have said "when you add target sights to a fixed sight gun it should have a different model number, so lets start callling it a model 50". But then when they made another run of them in 1989 those were marked 36-6.
