# of rounds needed for Self Defense ?

Actually, even if you're unfire, you're not likely to suffer severe injuries from your ammo cooking off. No worse than the burns anyway.

But I digress. SOP9, an old study - circa 1981 from the NYPD has come up. Originally, the numbers from this were crunched wrong to generate the "three shots" per incident rule. "Incidents" initially included things like suicides, ADs, shooting dogs, etc. Once those were factored out it came out to around six shots fired per officer in an incident. In other words, the circa 1981 NYPD officers were basically emptying their revolvers.

By 2000 the number of rounds fired per incident were somewhere around 16ish.

These are the guys who have back up and partners. Citizens don't have those luxuries.
