I don't know if this has made the national news but here in the SW it is a big deal. It seems an off duty Border Patrol Agent was found severely beaten and left on the side of the road near Las Cruces. The news accounts are vague and convoluted. The FBI eventually got involved. This has been unfolding for weeks and it seems to change with time and the wind.

The gist of the story, at least the latest version, is that the agent was helping his mother and younger brother operate his mother's "roach coach". Two men approached the agent wanting a ride to a gas station/ convenience store because their car was broke down. One man is an illegal alien, the other has jailhouse tats. One of the two has a pistol exposed in his waist band.

The agent isn't armed even though its common knowledge that the drug cartel has advertised threats against agents. He sees the gun, fears for his mother's safety, doesn't call local LEOs. Instead drives the two thugs to an empty lot near the Rio Grande River where they commence to beat the pulp out of him. The Agent is found and hospitalized with near fatal injuries. The two thugs are arrested, the gun turns out to be a BB gun.

The mother who was told by the Agent that he would return immediately, doesn't call the law even when the son doesn't return for hours.

Does this sound a little fishy to you, too.

If you are getting your information from the various media sources it will never make sense.

There is a lot more to the story than is being reported, I'm sure. Just last month, another off duty BPA was stabbed in his left eye and abdomen. The stab wound in the eye entered the brain and cut the brain stem. The agent died. It has yet to be publicized as to whether or not it was a line-of- duty death.

In regards to the first story, the agent suffered defensive cuts to his hands. Apparently the perp without the BB gun, was armed with a machete. So if I have this straight, an unarmed off duty BPA gives a ride to two thugs, one with a pistol exposed in his waist band and the other toting a machete. Makes total sense to me.

Knowing full well the number of threats to LEOs in this area, the increased number of murders just across the border, why would any off duty LEO go anywhere unarmed. I don't go to the library without being armed.

If that's the same story then there more to the story. I'd have to dig up the article but I believe they also mutilated his hands. Something that had to do with his fingers. I don't know if that meant they broke his fingers or cut off or what

Edited: I'd let IA / OPR in concert with the FBI handle the investigation. Insufficient info here to render a judgment one way or the other in the absence of additional details. It certainly bears further investigation to determine or rule out whether there's any malfeasance involved.

The cuts to his hands were reported as defensive cuts, then reported as possible amputation. Amputation of fingers is a common punishment for theft among the drug cartels. I'm certainly not saying that that is the case here since I have no first hand knowledge. Between the sketchy reports of the papers and law enforcement, its difficult to ascertain what really happened.

This area, Deming, NM and El Paso, TX border area is ripe with drug cartel activity. Drug and human smuggling is common. So much drug money comes back across the border and supports the local economy, that is the reason El Paso is a wannbe sanctuary city. The wealthy here want open borders, the drug cartels want open borders, the illegals here want open borders, but that is another topic.

This is the most complete summary of the state of the investigation and the known facts I've found.

It appears the bad guys were a) idiots and b) may have been drunk, and the fact that the victim was a Border Patrol agent had nothing to do with anything.

I still don't understand why he wouldn't be armed off-duty, even working his mother's tamale stand.

I had not seen this. May have even been posted after my original thread posting. I was going by various reports published previously. Still why unarmed and why no calls to the local law by anyone, mother, brother, or agent.

How come the agent wasn't armed. How come the agent didn't slam on the brakes on the roach coach causing the two hood rats to go threw windshield

My ten year old granddaughter wouldn't believe that incident went down the way it's been reported. However, this is a girl that loves my coffee mug which say's "Deny everything, Demand proof, Show me the video".

The BPA that I knew and worked some cases with back in the stone age where some of the toughest most street wise LE there was. Don't know about today's crop. Like OLDNAVYMCPO, I'm troubled by "Still why unarmed and why no calls to the local law by anyone, mother, brother, or agent". In addition, IF the agent saw the pistol in the suspects waistband and with the jailhouse tat's being visible then why did he agree to give them a ride. The KFOX14 article also reads like a fairy tale. Granted, one written by a seasoned FBI agent but none the less a fairy tale. There is an old LE saying that goes something like "There is the trust, the whole truth and nothing but the truth & somewhere in there is what really happened" Interesting, very very interesting. hardcase60

Being armed is a choice since he wasn't working.

The rest of that is movie not reality.

The available information may leave question marks, but I think you watch too many cartoons ... :D

I know lots of cops that never carry off duty.

I used to work with an ICE agent (legacy BP) who almost never carried ON duty. He kept his gun in the console of his G-ride and only put it on to make planned arrests.

Our BP officers are now trained in Artesia, New Mexico at the Federal Academy there.
All new BP Officers go through there.
I'm certain the Instructor cadre there knows all about this and have made modifications to fit this kidnapping.
