Saw a NIB 14-3 with an 8 3/8" barrel but the price was just too high for me. I haven't seen too many long tube 14's and I really don't know what they go for. A Grand was the price.

A grand sounds a bit high to me. I picked one up about a year ago LNIB for $595 at a LGS.

I wish I could get $1000 for my LNIB 14-3.
For a long time, my collecting activities were focused on the K-38, including all the Model 14 variations (by that I mean dash numbers). I have a passel of them, all 6" versions, since I have never had an interest in the 8 3/8" variant. The majority of mine are ANIB. The most I have ever paid for any of them was $575 delivered and that one was an ANIB Model 14-2.
Granted, it has been several months since I last purchased one, since of late I've been concentrating on acquiring the S prefix M&P revolvers. But $1,000 for any Model 14, let alone the easily acquired 14-3, seems quite a bit out of line to me. I might go that high for a Dayton gun or one of the ISP 5" K-38s (if it was in top condition), but not for a run-of-the-mill Model 14-3.

I have personally never shot a 8,3/8" gun. Never saw 1 at the range. I enjoy my 6" -3. I have $400 into it. Nice gun! FOR ME, I would rather buy 2 of something than buy 1 for $1000. I am an old cheapo! Bob

I have a pair of 8 3/8" K frames; one Model 14, one Model 17. Both are tack drivers, but are not the best for shooting off-hand, since both are very muzzle-heavy.
The $1K price the OP cited is way high. The longer tubes are scarce, but not rare, and are a bit less collectible than the shorter 6" barrels.

I avoid LNIB for two reasons -
- They cost too much.
- They may decline in value if I shoot them much.
I like nice old guns, but mine are kind of 99% or less at best, and no box. DON'T GET ME WRONG - I truly appreciate those LNIB guns, and I'm glad they exist, but for me, the only reason to buy one is pride of ownership rather than as a collector piece I can shoot and enjoy. $1000 seems high to me, too, but as others have said, with nice old S&W's you don't pay too much, you just pay too early. But I don't collect LNIB, so I can't speak with authority. Best wishes.
