Australian surfer's leg washes up after shark attack

The severed leg of a surfer who was attacked by a shark has washed up on an Australian beach, with doctors now racing to see if it can be reattached.

Kai McKenzie, 23, was surfing near Port Macquarie in New South Wales (NSW) on Tuesday, when a 3m (9.8ft) great white shark bit him.

He managed to catch a wave into shore, where an off-duty police officer used a makeshift tourniquet to stem his bleeding, according to authorities.

His leg washed up a short time later and was put on ice by locals before being taken to hospital, where a medical team is now assessing surgery options...

Reminds me of a story I read once, don't know if it's true or not, about 2 British soldiers during the Falklands war. They were hit by artillery fire and one of them, clutching a bloody stump, yelled, "I've lost me leg!" The other one yelled back, "No you haven't, it's right over there!"

Glad it wasn't turned into Lost and Found, it would have been tossed into a box and forgotten.

I surfed every chance I got in mid 60's Oahu. No one ever thought about sharks. Now it happens all the time.
We went to Honolulu a few times on vacation when I was a kid.I don't remember any shark warnings.

But in Oz, as my gf (who was born there) reminds me, everything is deadly.

The Daily Mail has an article on "why it won't be an easy task to reattach his limb." No kidding...

"An off-duty police officer is credited with saving Mr McKenzie's life after he used his dog's leash as a makeshift tourniquet to stem the loss of blood..." Thus proving yet again that a dog is man's best friend.

Sharks, like every other living creature, are now protected in Oz, and we wonder just why the numbers are rapidly multiplying and the fear of humans is diminishing.

The sharks are running out of food, large scale industrial fish harvesting is depleting ocean life. So sharks are getting closer to land to see if maybe some of the land creatures occasionally fall into the ocean. I mean it could be couldn’t it?

Just......
HANG FIVE

Never give fish a fighting chance.

A buddy and his wife bought a little 30' wooden sailboat.
First time offshore in California, a big Shark came alongside the boat, lifted it's head out of the water, looked at them, and they sold the boat.

Ernest Hemingway kept a Thompson sub machine gun on his boat to shoot sharks.
