Oh My, Model 28s Are Oh So HIGH !!/update

THAT"S CRAZY!!

I even think that is too high for a 98% vintage M27, but I guess others think differently. Well, I guess that makes my M28 that much more valuable. :)

I picked on up, along with a Model 58, for $300 (no box). Again, as stated in other posts, some people have money and to them, the sky is the limit.

Actually, the gun joseywales2 is talking about. The one bought for $1349,was bought by my dad.But there was reasons behind the purchase.First off, it was a model 28 no dash unfired in the box.And the other reason was it was only 60 serial numbers away from a 99% 28 no dash six inch With original box he already had.He is a collector and not a shooter, so condition is everything to him.And he is not out to resale. So even though this price was super high there was a reason behind it.keith

My mistake there, sorry about that. I just remembered it was P&R, so I was thinking -2 probably as it's more common.

Anyway, usually when things get bid up that high it's like you say, a special serial number or it fits a hole in a collection. I don't begrudge people who spend that kind of money... it's their money and they can spend it how they like. I don't have a collection like that so it seems a little crazy to me, but I can understand from your fathers point of view why he "had to have it".

Crazy prices anymore, but that one is obscene. Heck, I gave my nephew a 4" model 27 couple years ago and figured it was worth maybe $500-600 in 95% condition. Something he can shoot and remember uncle "Big Chief" by.

This is a good reason why you shouldn't bid on things while smoking crack! Like a couple of the other posters here, I bought a 6" 28 in the mid 70's. It was 1975 and it was the first gun I purchased after getting my license to carry. I paid $135. The gun is still around as I gave it to a close friend about 20 years ago. He's carried it on his trap line and has killed all manner of game with it including a black bear. But I have to say, IMHO, that's way too much for a 28. Even as nice as it is.

Interesting... I'm wondering whether or not the winning bidder even expected it to go that high since all of his bids were proxy bids, most
likely submitted by one the bid sniping sites.

I know people sometimes put an outrageously high bid ceiling on their snipe, expecting that no one would go that high.

Was the other guy savvy enough to know that and decided to just mess with guy by bidding him up, or just wanted it in the worse kind of way?

Wow... things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

There was a colt I really wanted several years ago.It looked like I would get it at a very good price, but I put a fairly high max on it to be sure.In the final 15 minutes someone tried to snipe it and drove the price up to my max.It was annoying, but now it's worth 30% more than I paid and I've enjoyed owning and shooting it.

BBQ, welcome to the Forum! I bought a 28 no dash on Christmas day, for $450 + shipping etc. It is a 6" from 1960. 95% +. Aftermarket grips as yours. I think that you did just fine! Down the road you will realize what a deal you got! Enjoy your 28! Bob

The "poor man's" Model 27 lol

I better get a nice 4" before the prices go through the roof!

I'm thinking the buyer was drugged. My 4" 28-2 with a "S" serial number, and in the same condition as described in that auction, cost me $450. I've added a box, instructions, ammo flyer, and tools, and haven't spent $530 yet.

WOW!

+1 Gunny!
I am working to do the same with my "S" 4" 28-2.
Replaced with correct stocks and I have the owners manual on the way.

That auction price is just stupid. I'n new to S&W, but I am not that new.

A lot of you have some misinformation.

1. 99% of what Mark (the "Dog") lists starts at .01, no reserve, and normally runs them 2 weeks.
2. 99% of the firearms he lists are consignments. He charges a 15% consignment fee.
3. The market, you buyers who sometimes have more money than sense, determine the final price. It makes the consignee very happy.
4. There is no sniping. There is a 10 minute rule just like GB has the 15 minute rule.

I have consigned many firearms, to the "Dog", because his auctions will bring top dollar.

Just wanted to be clear, at least for my part (and reply), I hold nothing against the seller. Heck, if you can get that kind of money from someones clenched fist, good for you. I just opined the buyer lost his mind. Are we good? :o

Oh heck yeah. We're fine. Firearms are just things that go "bang". It's none of our business how someone spends their money, but it sure is a lot of fun to goof on them.:D

Mark lives about 10 minutes from me. I've seen huge collections that people have consigned to him, to sell over a several month period. It's about a 2 month lag time from when he receives a consignment to listing it. Business is real good. I was at his house several months ago and he had just brought in 2 crates full of blue (and a few gold) boxed S&W's. This 28 was probably one of them.

Interesting. Someone's "never fired" collection going up for auction. Not my kind of thing, but whatever.
