Oiling my 617

Hi! When I clean my 617, I only use a very light coating of oil on all of the gun parts. I have never cocked the gun and swabbed and oil down in side there. Actually, I have never cleaned down in there. What do you recommend? My gun shop told me yesterday, that I was doing a good job of cleaning!

This is my normal procedure also. Although I will lightly clean the bore also. In most cases that is all that is needed.

Totally agree that the OP is on the right track. Revolvers are not designed to be field stripped the way that semi-automatic pistols require. That's what S&W says and I believe them.

I was taught to cock the hammer and put one drop of oil in there. One drop in the crane, another on the extraction rod and one on the face of the extraction star where it rubs against the back of the inside frame and that's about it. I've followed this practice for well over 40 years and all my revolvers run fine.

I put a drop or two in by the cocked hammer and a drop or two (with gun upside down) by the trigger about once a year. I use a CLP, not a heavy oil. Your S&W doesn't need much more than this, just keep it clean (chambers and bore), and wipe down the exterior.

Don't go spraying a bunch of heavy body gun oil down into the internals. I did this with Break Free CLP and Shooters Choice and over time both became gummy and stiff...used break cleaner to remove the gummy residue and now just a drop or two of Rem Oil. Rem Oil is thinner , and has teflon in it , the oil will dissipate in time but leaves a film of teflon to lube and not get all gummy . Less is better when dealing with the internals of a DA S&W.
