Seems to have been a lot of posts lately about shotguns, one running right now about “what is under your bed”, and the shotgun appears to be the winner.

Question is, what do you load up that shotgun with – buckshot? Slugs? Or maybe a little of both?

What if we know it's buckshot, but have no clue what kind? He just showed me how to operate the shotgun this past Saturday. I wasn't able to pull the thing back far enough for the bullet to go in (I don't know the technical name for it). We decided to leave it loaded so I wouldn't have to worry about doing it under stress.

Mossberg 590 3" 000 buck and slugs. Saiga one 10 rd magazine of 00 buck, one 10 rounder of #4 buck, one 5 rounder of slugs.

18.5" Cylinder bore 870 (Tritium bead)
In her, 2 3/4", #4 (plated) Buck.
Stock cuff, 00 Buck.
I've found that almost without exception, any cyl. bore I've owned does well with #4 Buck. It's been the case with a Win. 1300, a Mossberg 590 and 870's. At 7 yards I get a beautifully round pattern about 9"-12" in diameter, ammo dependent. Also ammo dependent will be a tendency on the part of 00 to string vertically at close range. At least out of my un-modified barrels?
(EDIT) Dixie, the fore arm is the part your describing. The gun can be described as a "pump" or a "slide" action. Depending on the fore arms "reach" from the shooter. I can understand someone petite or with compromised mobility having trouble with it.

Remington 870: The first two shots up are #4 shot. The next two are 000 Buck. I have 3 more 000 Buck and 2 more 00 Buck in an ammo holder that wraps around the stock. I reckon if that doesn't stop the bad guys, my shoulder will hurt so much that I would want one of 'em to shoot me!

I sold all my shotguns because BO protects me now. However, they used to carry eight rounds of Remington Express 00 9 pellet, 2 3/4", and a box of 15 2 3/4" one ounce Remington slugs was with the gun.

My favorite load is Centenrion Buck and Ball. One 65 caliber ball on top of 6 Number 1 buckshot. At 20 yards my two 18 1/2 inch Cylinder bore high cap pumpers will shoot the ball to point of aim with the buck spreading to 10 inches around it. Just for giggles I tried it in my Mossberg 12 ga rifled slug gun will shoot into a 3 inch circle at 25 yards. Now the buck goes all over creation, but I expect that. Kinda hard to find around here, but I bought up a goodly supply a while back. Second favorite is Remington Reduced Recoil 00 buckshot. Similar pellet spread, just more of them, and no big hole in the middle.

Will someone explain #4"buckshot" to me. I have used #4 shot for tough birds like pheasant and ducks, but wouldn't consider it for a deer. Is there a special kind of #4 that is "Buckshot"?
