Old .38

Can anyone tell me exactly what I have.
The markings on the barrel are:
BNP .38 .767'
31/2 Tons Per square" (it is actually a box).
That's on the left side of the barrel.

The right side is:
.38 S&W CTG

The top of the barrel is:
Patented Feb.6.06, Sept.14.09, Dec.29.14

Serial no.: 719xxx The letter P also appears on the butt of the gun.

I think the grips are walnut diamond cut with a big diamond shape in the middle where the screw is located. Also, the top of the grips there is a nickel or silver s&w stamp on an arch on both sides. It is also a blued gun.

Yours is a S&W M&P pre-Victory model which was shipped early in 1941. It was made for the British Commonwealth military, and chambered in .38 S&W, aka .38/200. It is a different cartridge from the more common .38 S&W Special. Yours likely has a 5" barrel. Please attach a picture or two for better identification of the grips and assessment of condition.

No, the gun has not been butchered up as so many were done that way.

Here are some pics of my gun. BTW, I didn't mention the lanyard hole in the butt of the grip.
