Was looking through eBay recently at holsters. Not that I need another one. Saw a new looking DeSantis Speed Scabbard for a 4 inch L Frame. Offered the Seller $25.00 and it was accepted. It is in brand new condition! Decided to break out the Model 581 for my walk today, since I had the new leather. Wish I still had the receipt from the now defunct Oshman's Sporting Goods where I bought it in 1984ish. I occasionally think of selling it, as it mostly just sits in the safe these days, but then I come to my senses. It carried well for my walk down a country road in the mountains. 57 degrees and sunny. Happy Father's Day!!

Very nice. Incredibly it was a brisk 58 degree here in beautiful East Central NC this morning, topping out at a delicious 83 low humidity degrees!

OP, glad you kept it. For my $, the 581/681 is a keeper. No nonsense, no firing pin or mainspring concerns. Just load and fire. Repeat. A service revolver in every sense of the term. Also, there is no modern equivalent, altho one might argue the 686 SSR which I own and treasure.

Now, I wish I could carry a gun like that. Presently, the K-frames which I used to comfortably carry concealed are too much for me. The radiation has a long shadow...

The 581 and to a lesser degree the 681 ( I detest stainless ) are the only " modern" S&W revolvers that interest me. The last of the duty wheel guns.
I would love to pick up a 581 ( relenting on my hate stainless in the 681 since neither is common but the 681 more so)

Bought my 581 in 1983. It was my primary trail and woods gun, carried many a mile here in Ohio. Most perfectly balanced handgun I own. I mostly shoot 38 spl. +p level or 38/44 level loads (In 357 cases) out of it now, which is more than enough power for this part of the country. As a matter of fact, I think of it as a modern day version of the 38/44.

BTW, I love that speed scabbard.
