Yes, we all have them. I met Joe when we were both 13. My family had just moved to a new town & I was just getting used to living in the country. This was in 1944, so I met Joe then. We hit it off right away. So the years passed, Joe went in the Air Force and I went in the National Guard. This was during the Korea so called Police action. We both married and had children. We met again later on. Joe just passed away I heard tonight age 94, I am 93. A real sad time for this old bugger. We were friends for over 80 years. Sorry for the rant, the screen got a bit blurry.

I have an old friend Peter who I've known since we were both 8 years old. We met at the local YMCA. Later on we ended up at the same junior high school and graduated from high school together in Ohio. We went off to college and grad schools separately, but we always kept in touch at least with Christmas cards. After a while both of us ended up in the Philadelphia suburbs, and I visited Pete and his family on occasion and we kept sending each other Christmas cards. He stayed in the Philadelphia area but I moved around to Maryland and the Gettysburg area.

Peter is now the president of a seminary in Philadelphia. One day a few years ago a received a phone call from Peter's secretary who said that he wanted to come out to see me if it was OK with me. I immediately said I would be very happy to see him.

Peter came out and we had lunch at a local diner. I asked him why he decided to come out to see me. He replied that out of all his old childhood friends I was the only one he knew of who was still alive.

Peter is a published author, and he gave me some of his books, with one inscribed "to my longest oldest childhood friend."

I'm sorry to hear about your friend, may he rest in peace. Says a lot about you and him to have a friendship for that long, that is something special. I hope you are taking care of yourself as well, that is a terrible thing to deal with.
