Anyone know maker of grip adapter on this old 44 special. It has some chipping on the side and looks like Bakelite ??? Thank you.

Are you sure it is a Bakelite material? From your images, I get the impression of wood. Also, the screw head coming from the bottom of the adapter is new to me.

If you can, remove the stocks and take a picture of how it attaches to the frame. And, if possible, remove the adapter and show it from all sides.

I have adapters from Pachmyar, Mershon, S&W, Tyler, and BK but have never seen one with the screw in that location. My bet is that it is homemade. A good job too.

I love the grip adapter, but I also love the 'wondersight'. I have a couple of the original first runs and a couple of the later runs. They both work great!
The biggest difference from original to late is the knurling on the knob.
I also agree that the adapter looks like walnut, in which case I could make those chips disappear. :-)

Could we see a picture of the screw out of the adapter?

Curious if its common looking and what size thread it might be.

Is there any markings on the inside of the adapter.

I really like it, seems like it would be tricky to drill the hole in the frame at the perfect angle.

There is a guy here in California that has has a wooden one on his K38. He said he knows for a fact that its a custom one off. No tapped screw in the top though. This one has a clip thats squeezed between the two stock halves and held in place when the original stock screw is tightened down.

The new images suggest walnut. I am guessing a one of a kind, custom build. I like it and wish it were mine!

Kevin

There have been a couple guns on this forum through the years with a hole drilled in the frame in this spot. It;s been guessed that it may have been for some type of adapter.

This is the first screw held adapter I have seen on here. It makes the adapter thought a bit more plausible.

But who knows, maybe homemade grip adapters were the rage for awhile. I would like one myself!!

I'm not an expert woodworker, but this gives me an idea for a project, sans the threaded hole in the frame part.
