Based on these crappy cell phone pics, can someone tell me what this old gun is?

LGS has had it for a while. It is a .22 Short and has a big chip in the right stock panel. He's asking $750. I'm not a buyer, but it might be something that someone here is (or not) interested in.

Thanks, Masterpiece. I was just curious. I doubt the LGS owner knows what it is or how to look it up in the Blue Book. He probably priced it like a lot of gun show sellers -- "old = big $$$".

The Model 1, 2nd Issue was made from 1860 to 1868, with over 110,000 manufactured. That Model 1 was shipped in 1866. I would say that the LGS is trying to charge 3X what it is worth. If you are not in a hurry to purchase, you can find these Model 1, 2nd Issue revolvers in that condition for under $250.

It is too bad that there are sellers out there who either do not know what they have or, more likely, intentionally trying to fleese the customers.

Skeezix, You're a S&WCA member. You should be able to identify this gun from your copy of the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 3rd edit. ! See page 66. As said above, the LGS that has this beat up example of a Model One at $750 asking, needs a reality check! Ed.

There are some No. 1s worth that, but certainly not the one shown. Before pulling out your credit card, do the research first.

Agree, I paid $230 for mine. Locks up tight and will try some BB caps one of these days. SN on right grip matches that on butt and assembly numbers also match.

Well your gun, no offense meant, is not in the condition of the OP's gun. In your photos, the silver is dark, which is either tarnish or possibly an old refinish (blue) job. The blue on your barrel is mostly gone.

For the OP's gun, its not worth $750, but certainly it would be a bargain at $250. With better photos, I think the gun is most likely worth $350 or so. It looks to have much original silver on frame, and some blue on barrel and cylinder.

Apology

You're right, Ed! It's all right there on page 66/67.

I got lazy, and I stand duly reprimanded.:o

My apology to the other members who responded to an unnecessary thread answering a question I could have answered myself with a little research.

But, the question remains --- will it handle +P?;)
