Old Guns,Old Man, fixin’ to get a gobbler!

These photos have me Jonesing for my season opener in the middle of April.

I have two goals this year. I'm hoping I can find a nice Merriam’s Tom and my plan is to take him with my Winchester Model 42 .410 with a Federal 3" TSS#9 13/16 oz. load. The pattern looks good out to 40 yards which is a longer distance than I have ever shot at turkey.

Yup, I'm counting the days and driving my wife nuts with my calls.

What did hunters ever do before 3 1/2" & 10g magnums and special turkey ammo. They shot their bird with the gun they used for everything else. The old guns will kill them as dead as a new one. Everything now days is sales hype. Bass Masters, Buck Masters, ect its all to create a market for a line of specialty stuff hawked by premoters.

For sure! This 100 plus year old full and fuller choked A.H. Fox AE 12 Gauge with a mild 1 1/4 oz. of lead #6s has been deadly a number. When I do my part and call them in closer than 40 yards it's dinner.

Love seeing pics of old guns in the field- my late grandfathers A-5 makes it out with me to the dove fields of Southern VA every September.

Great gun and Cutts. Younger shooters have never heard of them, kinda like my Python. You got to love the A5

Turkey Hunt this Spring.

Old man. Ok, that’s no hindrance. I have a like new Parker Trojan 12 gauge that was my grandfathers, 1922. Use Federal ammo for old guns, 1 oz shot, but I’ve been to turkey shoots with 2 3/4” magnum. They’ll handle these easily. Chamber area looks about 3/16” thick.

Good luck on your hunt! We have ‘em here in Wyoming too. My grandson pulled the trigger on this one while his Dad held the shotgun last year. Our season opened on the 1st, and I’m gonna try to get up to their place in a couple of weeks to get one myself. I know the shotgun purists will frown on this, but I have an old 1892 Winchester in 25/20 that I like to use on ‘em.

I believe the 25/20 or 32/20 is the perfect turkey gun. To me there is not much sport in shooting a Turkey on the ground with a shotgun. In Ohio we aren't allowed rifles.
