Old M&P ?

Hope some one can tell me what i actually have.
Bought this gun a year ago or two, cost me $275
Got some were and some rust on the front of barre. I belive its an early M&P .38S&W 4"

I'd say Regulation Police, but the combination of that front sight and the 5-screw frame seems out of place. Someone will be along directly to give you chapter and verse.

well the numbers are a match on barrel and frame. So whats wrong with the sight?
I am a newbee at the later Smith's.

O by the way its a 4-screw, if that makes it easyer to tell what it is? I might be wrong on the age of this gun.
The gun is "cute" just need som tlc.

I may be mistaken but it looks like a 5 shot cylinder. Wouldn't that make it a J frame or earlier?

It is a 38 Regulation Police.
I frame.
Somewhere between 53 and 56. Later became Mod 33. In 1960, it switched to the J frame with longer cyl, was marked Mod 33-1.

it's a 5 screw, the other screw is under the grip.

No, it is a 4-Screw SIDEPLATE.
It does not have a trigger guard screw.
