Miss Shaolin approves of this thread.

This guy showed up at my house 4 years ago and was down to skin and bones. Most likely someone dumped him out because they didn't want to take care of him anymore.
He is the friendliest good natured cat I've ever seen. The Mrs. didn't want another cat in the house so I put a pet door in my shop. He comes and goes as he pleases but has a warm dry place where he gets feed and watered he hasn't wandered far in 4 years and he's spoiled rotten.
I have no idea how old he is and I just call him "Shop Cat".

I don't know why but we seem to mostly collect black cats. The boss cat here came up to the house 10 years ago...torn up pretty good. Skinny and chewed up pretty good Kinda certain he had been in a fight with a coon. He was around as a stray for a year or two but not our cat. We had a bunch of cats around and fed them...caught 'em and had 'em spayed or neutered and rabies shots etc. turned 'em loose. Well this black one my wife the nurse fixed up pretty well. Took him to the vet and un-natural things happened to him. Since he was black and they wanted it to have a name I did call him Blackie. Fast forward 10 years he is still here and in charge. Wife picked up a kitten a few years back...a calico?..It's mother was killed by a car and she brought it home fed it from a bottle and it is 2nd in charge...now we have had another black one come to the house...it was injured in the past and walks with a very bad limp and twist...but it decided it needed a home. We called it cranky cause it walked like it was cranking up his tail. It has escaped the coyotes and other predators for a couple years...so here we are with 3 "owners" and they let us live here for mostly free...we just have to pay for their food.. Guess it's worth it though. They keep telling us it is

And by the way, I'd like to clear something up while we are talkin' 'bout our furry friends:

See, I haven't always been a cat lover. All my life I was (and still am) a dog lover. In my youth and early adulthood I didn't always have a dog but I still enjoyed the dogs that my friends and family had....always...a LOT.

But dogs are high maintenance. The have to be bathed and walked and all my dogs were very active and required a lot of play time. I do believe that I enjoyed that more than they did. As I am today I could not give a dog the kind of life he would want and need. I would Love to have a dog or 3 but it would be unfair to them.

Cats, on the other hand, can pretty much take care of themselves. Yes, they are very different, and you have to go into cat wrangling with the right expectations and attitude. They can be very affectionate and loving. The change requires some adjustments. If you go from dogs to cats you go from being the master to being staff. But like any other relationship, you get out of it what you put into it.

So the bottom line here is that I miss dogs but I'm quite happy and content with the cats.

Onward and upward

We have a 15 year old female cat, Grey Girl. She spends most of
the time in the feed room and outdoors. On very cold winter nights
she is a house cat. She does not take any gruff from the 2 Yorkies
and had to teach the male Yorkie a couple lessons on how sharp
her claws were. He now gives her plenty of space. Her brother,
Big Boy also about 20 lbs passed 3 years ago this Thanksgiving.
I've always liked cats and dogs, Grey Girl is our only cat ATT and
two outdoor dogs ( also house dogs on very cold days) and two
indoor dogs (Yorkies)

Great stories about our furry friends. I have 3 housemates, Momma Cat,Oreo and Bear. 13 and 12 for Momma`s kittens.
When someone said that you get back what you put into that relationship with cats, he wasnt kidding. They amaze me every day.
Here`s Momma cat a few days ago. Even though shes a fat one she is still athletic, running, jumping and chasing her tail. A great companion and buddy.
Jim

What a great post! My big old guy, who is also a Mainecoon and usually on my lap right about now...unfortunately, he got bit by a copperhead yesterday. His normal incredibly big paw swelled up like crazy. He's on pain meds and hopefully will be ok. I've always felt incredibly lucky that we found each other, "two peas in a pod" as my wife likes to calls us. It puts a real smile on my face to know there are other 'pods" out there. :)

A friend of mine from the community theater group in Chambersburg, PA developed a liking for Tonkinese cats. He told me that the Tonkinese cats were bred to be very affectionate. I went to visit him one time and I started petting one of the cats. When I started to move my hand away, the cat reached out with its paw to bring my hand back.

It wasn't too long ago we had 6 cats. We are sadly down to 1 and this old boy is getting up in age. He is a rescue from the parish dump that my wife saved from a sure death. Of all the cats we had I didn't see this one as the lone survivor...I have no complaints.

This is Ted and we have formed quite a bond over the last couple of years. They say cats lower your blood pressure and he has done that on more than one occasion. I know he won't be our last and knowing my wife I won't be surprised if we have 6 again in the future.

I think the third shot is a bit of an oxymoron. :D

Love him and enjoy him. I have an old black cat that we got as a kitten from my Daughter's cat's litter. She kept one also. Mine has the original name of Blackie. Follows me around and sleeps with me every night. He is 15 years old now and enjoys being on the back porch (screened in) all day long, only comes in to eat and at night to sleep. Don't want to lose him......... By the way my Daughter's cat (Blackie's litter mate) is named Peck (that is short for Peckerhead), he was a real pistol when he was younger.

Actually we have five "kids" in the house. I wrote about mu "Old Man" cat Blackie, he is 15. He is first. Then is Oliver (Ollie) big and loveable, he is about 5 . Next is Olivia (Livy) she weighs 26 pounds, sort of waddles when she walks, she is 5 also. Then comes Spike, he is the smallest at 6 pounds and the next oldest at 12, he is deaf, so he is somewhat pampered. Last is Cleo, she is 10, and we also call her the "Psycho B*t*h". You never know if she will hiss at you or let you pet her. Also she stalks Livy every chance she gets.

This is Pepsi (Ruthie's favorite). 12 years ago she was found trapped and starving in an old Pepsi machine. She was terrified and has been skittish ever since. She tolerates me but has nothing to do with the kids, small enclosed spaces (the cat carrier requires a stop at the blood bank) or the other cats.

She follows Ruthie's every move and shadows her. Every night she sleeps on Ruthie's hip and stays behind her pillows while she is gone. I hope Pepsi never dies.
