Old School Knife

A new to me knife (the photos were taken by the prior owner):

Weidmannsheil lockback knife, made in Germany, pearl handles. Push down on small blade to unlock big blade.

In the Matt Helm series of books, in the first book it mentions that during the war his knife got stuck in a German, so he took the German's knife. A two-bladed folding knife, and the large blade would lock.

Long about the fourth book a Russian spy has Matt's knife, and opened the large blade, and was attempting to close it. But before Matt could tell him that you had to push on the small blade to unlock the large blade, he broke the blade.

I had often wondered if such a knife existed or if Mr Hamilton made it up for the series. Nice to know that it's a real thing.

Being a collector of antique folders for the last 50 years, my desires have not diminished. This is a neat little Sunday knife. In my line of work, I use a knife HARD. I seldom get more than a year out of one before it is lost or broken. My love for high quality folders with antique bone or stag handles used to make me leave them in the show case and take a Kershaw Leek to be sacrificed to my work. Then I figured it out. I carry one of my antique folders, sharpened to shaving sharp, for cutting purposes. In the other pocket is my lockback sacrificial folder for heavy work or for loaning out. I follow this philosophy with tools as well. I have drawers full of Snap-On tools for everyday usage, but I also have drawers full of lesser quality tools for the times I need to beat on them, weld them or grind them. I even have sacrificial guns.
