I recently purchased an older M&P marked BNP with crown above it. Marked on cylinder between each chamber, plus barrel and receiver. It has a 2" barrel and square butt. Chambered in .38 special. Can anyone tell me what I have?
Thanks

Welcome from Texas! Someone may wander by that can help, but you'd pobably get a quicker answer in the revolver section. Good luck.

Welcome from Wisconsin!

At first thought with that crown I'd say it's a gun that was issued to a PD in England or Canada or another country under British authority or has a king or queen or some other royalty. The "P" could stand for provincial or police. This is all just a guess on my part.

It is most likely a British Service Revolver from WWII. After they were released from the military many were cut down to a short barrel and rechambered for 38 Special. They were originally a 5 inch barrel in 38 S&W with a flat military finish. BNP is the proof mark added when released for civilian sale. A large number of these were returned to the US and converted for sale in the US market.

Does the serial number on the butt start with a V and is there any markings on the top strap? If so, this was certainly a British Service Revolver. Earlier versions were not marked on the top strap and did not have the "V" serial number.

Hope this helps.

Welcome to the Forum from Texas!

BNP with crown, means proofed in Birmingham, Nitro Proof.
Firearms brought into England were proofed and stamped. A serial number would be most helpful. I had a M18 that was from the mid 70's that was marked the same way as your description.
