Any one heard from them? I tried to email Dave Chiccone over a .32 Hand ejector I shipped him a year ago. I have heard nothing in response to two emails in the last month. He responded to me in April that he was injured. That was the last I heard from them. The website is down. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, RR

Another member just posted the same thing a couple days ago about a rifle. IIRC, he said the son is taking over, but that's still no excuse for not keeping their customers posted.

Probably swamped with work. Time spent responding to emails and phone calls means less time working on guns.

There is an excuse, they have had a lot of personal things happen in the last coupe of years. These are good people. Please be patience...

I've been to Dave's house/place of business in NC (Gastonia I think it is?). Yes, he is legit. He reworked a NM #3 and a .44DA for me a couple years ago. He's about 40 miles from my folks. I have a couple more for him but I haven't saved up the $ these will take. One is a pretty scarce .38-40 DA so I want it to be perfect.

I'm sure they are fine people. They certainly have a reputation for doing incredible work, and one must always exercise patience when dealing with gunsmiths that have that kind of reputation and the backlog that goes with it. However, in my opinion, which, since I've never used them is probably worthless, it is just bad business to not communicate with customers. It obviously leads to some very nervous people who have sent their property to them. A couple sentences in an email explaining the situation would probably ease the minds of those people and not take an inordinate amount of time away from the work.

There have been recent postings here to the effect that personal or health problems have caused long delays in getting work done. I also remember someone's posting to the effect that they are no longer selling parts. Beyond that I know nothing.

I knew they were legit. I had gotten replies up until April. When I tried in Sept I got nothing. I thought they might be shut down. I appreciate the replies here. They have made me less nervous. i thought they may have closed down. If they are back logged I get it just tell me. Best regards to all. Thanks, RR

I have first hand knowledge, so I guess I'm as qualified to comment as anyone. I bought a 1926 3rd Model .44 HE that was in dire straights. I called the factory and they recommended Mr. Chicoine for older model repairs. On their word I contacted the shop and shipped my gun. I also learned at that time that Dave Sr. had pretty much retired and Dave Jr. was running the shop. My original work order, paid in full up front, gave an estimate that repairs would be completed in "4 to 5 months." No refinishing, just mechanical repairs. I tried to refrain from "are we there yet" emails. As time went by, the occasional email would be answered, but it might be weeks later. At the 6 month mark came word of a broken wrist. At 11 months 2 weeks I received my gun. I post this not as an attack on the shop, but merely as my experience. I understand that the turn-around time was an "estimate", not a promise. But I was frustrated it ended up over twice that much time. I have learned that many others have had similar experiences with this shop. In the spirit of full disclosure, I wanted to buy a sideplate screw for a pre-30, and Dave Jr. sent it to me at no charge. Lastly, if your experience has shown that it may take up to a year for you to complete repairs, please say so and let the customer decide. It might prevent ruffled feathers later.

I wouldn't be too harsh on them. Personal and family problems can pull the best of us through a rough knothole and take a long time to get past.
Perhaps we should just wish them well.
