for a month or so i have been reading some posts that kind of bug me a little i wont reply directly because i dont want to appear as a troll.
"any veteran shooter who got caught 'with his pants down' during this hickup in ammo supply needs to rethink his hobby"
what a crock of stinking rhetoric...kinda sick of hearing this hypocritical self congratulating line of b.s.
so if you run out of ammo you probably shouldnt own a gun?
or how about the grasshopper/ant analogy ?
if you do not have a year supply of ammunition ,you are somehow immoral?please.
let me ask you this: doesnt your arm get sore from patting your own back?
hope one of you preppers woke up this am with no cream for your coffee.
sorry, for the rant -i had to get it off my chest.
ps. i usually have about 1000 rnds on hand ,but with regular practice that is used up in 2-4 weeks . i will NEVER shoot ALL of my ammo ill always have some for sd/hd.
im no longer in danger of running out of practice ammo, i just laid in 1 -2 months supply, it was close though.

Not to mention those of us who are casual shooters (other than hunting) and can't always afford to buy up lots of ammo.
I'm happy to go to the range and shoot a few dozen rounds. I don't always have the extra money to spend.

Then when something like this happens, it sort grounds some of us.

I've got a years worth, or two, or three, etc. It just means that I have to be a little more conservative about what I use it for.:p

I might ask, just how does someone determine how much they are going to "need" in the next year or so? If you figure, say, 20,000 rounds should suffice, then you shouldn't be shooting any of it in case whatever disaster occurs lasts longer than you planned for.... (better have 30,000, or maybe 40,000, or????........ See what I'm getting at?)

The only thing that gets to me is people complaining about not having ammo and not wanting to work to get it.

There is ammo out there to be had but like all things in life you gotta work to get it. That might simply mean getting up at the crack of dawn. That could mean having to ask questions and make friends to find out when trucks will be arriving.

This OMG you bought 20 boxes of ammo and didn't leave me any attitude is sickening to say the least.

I want to completely for go the moral aspect of it and look at the underlying over tone. It scream's please regulate sales of a given item. I want my fair share even if I didn't put in the same effort or work for it as the other guy.

Maybe I am being to cynical about all this and should just keep my mouth shut. I just cant stand the mentality of I came in last but I still want to be treated as good as first place.

Personally if I ran across a caliber of ammo me and my friend have been looking for. I would buy them out if I could. I would then turn around and resale some of it at my cost to my friend's who I know would be happy to get it. I know they would do the same exact thing for me.

I've grown tired of all the "Oh poor me i can't find any ammo now"
personally. If you did'nt see the writing on the wall in 08' when B.O.
was first elected it makes me wonder a little. I don't condemn those
who are unprepared but please save the whining for someone who
wants to listen to it. As with anything it just takes a little planning
and forethought to not be "caught without".
Now the folks who want to continue to shoot at their normal rate
but can't find any ammo want to blame others for their unpreparedness.
The "it's so and so's fault", because they are buying up the ammo before
me is wearing thin.

Chuck

Alright, I admit it. I got caught with my pants down when it comes to .22lr. I didn't expect it to completely dry up. I've got a fair amount of everything else. Of course, I keep shooting, so I'm going to run into a primer problem if they don't start showing up soon.

Don't forget, not everyone has the means to keep large stocks of what they need. This could be any of a number of reasons. For me, the military chooses to move me around the country every couple of years. The movers won't touch ammo or components, and I can only fit so much in my truck and still have room for the wife and kids (some decisions are tough).

Hell,
I've got ammo from the 1930s....What's that make me?

Let's jest say, I got so many hundred head of stock, and I want to be sure to have enough feed for 'em.
You know to carry them through the winter or times of drought....

A season or two of hay and grain or cottonseed cake ought to do it right.

If you know your oats you'll do just fine...If ya don't...Well you'll sometime falter or fail.

Or next time build bigger barns

I think the guys in the 15-22 section have the right idea. Instead of criticizing others, they created a thread to help others find ammo. Probably the most active thread on this entire Forum. 1,050 positngs and 113,000 views since the last week in January.

If you need .22s or know where there is supply, click here- http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-wesson-m-p-15-22/292430-official-stock-22lr-ammo-thread.html

You may now return to fussing.

I spend most of my time reading contentious postings so I miss helpful info like that. :D

im not complaining that ammo is sometimes hard to come by,nor am i whining because you bought all the components before i could get to the store...
if you take the time to actually read the original post, you would understand that its the "holier than thou" attitude that offends me.
im a carpenter, im not made of money so i lay in supplies when i can. im constantly monitoring my components so that i can time my shopping trips so i dont have to (hopefully)buy lead powder and primers all at the same time ,not to mention different calibers i pay $65/500 for 158gr 358s and $90+ for 240 gr 430s $45/1000 for primers $36/pound for powder
its like an extra car payment keeping me in practice ammo. not complaining but this is why i couldnt hold 1-2years worth of ammo without cashing in some RRSPs. a month or two supply is the best i can do right now until i start casting my own.
why would i expect who/what your president is/ does or says to have any bearing on my hobby in canada?
if i cant afford to feed all my stock ill just pick my favorites and downsize the rest rather than starve them all on 2 year old fodder. i dont know one rancher that keeps that kind of surplus on hand anyway . wouldnt you be constantly feeding two year old hay just to keep the rotation going? seems kind of inefficient .
my family put up enough hay to feed the critters through the winter and early spring and calving then after branding they got summer vacation on the range. there was usually only a few ton left by then .

I reckon a lot of y'all must be looking... It jumped another thousand views in the last hour since I posted the link here.

What happens when there is a drought? Do you panick buy hay? It's all called human nature. Noe every person thinks the same and some just did not lay in enough to last them through the hard times.

RANT ON!!!!!!!!!!

I definitely looked. And will keep an eye on it. Nearest place to buy ammo for me is 40 minutes away at Wal Mart so I don't have the luxury of large selection. I have plenty of ammo as a reserve stash but I won't shoot that in the same way I won't use my savings unless necessary.

I don't blame anyone for my desire to have more or my lack of foresight in not buying more. Despite what I've seen postulated, I don't think that this is something that could have been foreseen with any degree of certainty. I think it's more of a black swan event the exploitation of which has had profound effects on the supply chain and consumer mindset. Still, those who foresaw the effect if not the cause, good for them.

I figure as long as I have enough now, I will be patient and there are other things to do in the meantime.

Arik,

It, kinda like a parable......

If I had X numbered of firearms to supply with ammunition...

It's a logistical planning sort of thing. ;):D

Yup. Had that thread not popped up when it did, I would have missed out on my last order of 5k from sgammo. It's amazing how fast it sells. I watched 200 cases/5k ea, vanish from inventory in a few minutes. And there was a limit of one case per customer.

I used to work with this feller. He was always saying that he needed to buy a gun and he needed to lay in some ammo.

Many times, at work, I'd spread the word - "I'm making up an ammo order". The more you buy, the less it costs. Shipping is less. Sometimes a site gives you a discount for a large order (Grafs used to do 5% on 500 and 10% on a thousand - d0n't know if they still do). But he never got in on the ammo orders.

He had a new truck. My newest one is 86. He had a new big screen TV. My 27" is ten years old. He'd go party and chase women on the weekends. I don't do that. He didn't have any money for guns and ammo. That's fine. That was his choice on how he was going to spend his money. I bought it when I could, whether I needed it or not, because it don't spoil, and it don't go down in price.

I suppose he is one of them folks now running around, paying two or three grand for a 500 dollar AR, and looking to find ammo for it at a dollar fifty a round.

He made his choice back in 06, and I made mine.

If he ain't got a gun, that ain't my fault. If he can't find ammo, that ain't my fault. And if I was to go to the store, wanting six boxes of ammo, and there were only five on the shelf, I'd buy all five. I would not worry about the guy coming in behind me that wants some. Just like Rick, HE's not my problem either.

Now, if someone came to me, because he remembered I'm a "gun guy", and wanted to buy a gun, because he couldn't find any in the stores, or wanted some ammo because the stores were all sold out - I might sell him a gun. I've got a couple I'd be willing to sell. But they would not be cheap. They certainly would not be for what I paid for them.

RANT ON!!!!!!!!!!

no id down size the herd ,yes you will lose money doing it but youll lose money buying hay that must be shipped from a non droughted area anyway. the profit margin on beef is pretty miserable at the best of times anyway.
this is a pretty shaky analogy . ranching is a business and a responsibility. recreational or sport shooting is just a hobby and like i said i dont know of one rancher that carries a two year supply of feed. do you ?

Well stated alpo, I was cought short in 08, so ammo buying became a hobby. Grasshoppers can become ants...
