I've got a chance to pick up a realy nice early 50's pre 27,ser s75xxx.This gun looks 99%, 6" bar, gold dot frt site, target grips,(didn't know they we're available that early). My? is about the blue finish, it's a bright shiney finish, not sure if it's right.I saw it at a show, couldn't remove the grips or anything. I know the dealer pretty well, he say's that it's legit, don't know if he qualifies as aS&W expert. Anybody have a nice picture for me to compare?

Thanks

the pre27/model 27's all had a very high polished bluing. It is more than likely correct but it never hurts to look under the grips

Here are some pictures of my two from mid 1950, as well as a link to the posting I did on them.

http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-hand-ejectors-1896-1961/279120-august-1950-357-magnums.html

They were both shipped in August of 1950. The one with the 3½" barrel (Serial Number S 76552) shipped to H.H. Harris in Chicago on August 19th, 1950, and the one with the 5" barrel (Serial Number S77982 shipped to Beck & Gregg Hardware in Atlanta, GA on August 21st, 1950.

Both are in mint condition and both of them are complete with the correct boxes, and tools.

You can also look at the post "ditrina" did on his First Year...First Month 357 Magnum 1950 "pre 27s" and the link to the post is here.

Here is another to look at, 6", high polish blue with numbered magnas, SN: 101xxx. SCSW says targets were available from 1954 and on. 75xxx was probably before that. Are they unrelieved targets?

Target stocks did not become generally available for N-frames until sometime in 1953. The target stocks on the .357 you described are not original to the revolver.

Could they not have been special ordered at the time ?

The target stocks on the gun do they have a relief cut out ?

Target stocks could not be special ordered because they were not available in 1950/51 (except for K-frames).

The stocks on the .357 have the relieved area on the left panel and date to 58/59 or later.

1 more ?, what would be a fair price? No box or anything, he had $1350 on it at the show , i kmow i can get it for 12-1250,what do you think?

Original grips would be better, so would a 3-1/2" barrel, but $1350 is not too far out of line if in original 99% condition. Test your bargaining skills to see if you can knock it down a couple of hundred.

I would want to get some clarification on the gold dot front sight. It may well not be original, but something added on such as a gold bead.

Thanks for the info I wasn't sure on the dates of non relieved N frame targets

The ".357" Magnum was available with any of S&W's sights and could have been special ordered with a McGivern gold bead front sight blade. A photo would really help, but the only way to know if the sight is original is a check the shipping invoice and that requires ordering a letter from Mr. Jinks.

You are looking at one of the earliest post war production .357 Magnums. There were a very few post war .357 Magnums made from primarily from pre war parts. The regular production model of 1950 .357s began around serial 75000. Whether its worth $1350 or not is kinda up to you. However, if I was looking at it, I would consider that new ones list for more than that, have the lock in the side and are considered as good a revolver as the post war production guns. At least you have a choice. :-)

This Is.....

S 7600x. The stocks in this pic are not original to the gun.

Magna's like these

with this distinct shoulder configuration would be correct for that time.
