On naming children - are parents insane?

Nobody is making fun of people. The topic is "On naming children - are parents insane?".

There is absolutely no disparagement on the people at all, and this "inherited affliction", if you will, can strike any unsuspecting baby.

Back to the topic of odd names, I knew a girl named Candy Cohn.

My sister once worked with someone named Listerene. A classmate back in High School was named Candy Kane and I had a friend who had the first name of Polly, she wouldn't tell me for a long time what her middle name was, but finally admitted she was named for her aunt Esther. I replied "Oh my gosh, your parents named you Polly Esther?" And yes, she was asked many times growing up if she wanted a cracker.

I once saw a really odd spelling of a name in the crime section of our local fishwrap, it was 'AntJuan'.

Mr. GDLT31,
We are not supposed to feed the trolls...Have a nice day.

Hey on a more related topic (kinda)...

While Karli lived in Omaha...her gynecologist's name...yes it's real....and I imagine he was a hit at all the gynecological conventions.....

Dr. Beaver.

No reflection on his parents...but pretty funny none-the-less!

Talk about a calling from birth!

Bob

My boy just turned one. His name is Jack. His middle name is Colton, a westernization of my wife's maiden name.

In his daycare, located on the campus of a prestigious private university at which my wife is employed, there is no shortage of off-the-wall names.

Jack has classmates named Keegan and Ambrose and Oepha and Lemuel. Looking at the rosters on other classroom doors is a study in the absurd.

Interestingly, when other parents learn my son's name is Jack, they always comment on what a great name it is, as if it's some novel and fresh idea.

Weird.

I saw a stripper once (in my wilder and younger days) named Chastity Fox... introduced as the little lady who wears mink all day and fox all night.

Now that I think about it... this may have just been a stage name.

I don't know, Barb. I think we are definitely disparaging the parents who choose to inflict all these idiotic monikers on their kids.

An elderly gentleman I met a few years back was called "Extra".

I asked how he got that name, thinking it was a nick-name.

He explained "I am the youngest of 13 & my folks just ran out of names."

My brothers best friend in high school was Dick Tracy. My daughter had an elementary school friend who was named Raintree ( a 60's thing). I heard she is now a county commissioner.

We have a dentist in a neighboring town named Bonnie D. Light.
A few guys that work for our company...Rusty Waters, Dusty Rhodes, and two guys that work together, Bert and Ernie.

I used to work as a bouncer at a strip club, one of the dancers went by "Velvet".Come to find out,it wasn't a stage name.
Also, played guitar in a band for a bit with a father and son,Rod Johnson and Rod Johnson,Jr.The father didn't mind being called "Big Rod",but the son wasn't too fond of being called "Little Rod".

My buddies dad is Richard Horn, and of course he goes by Dick.

My MIL is a long time midwife and Female (Fe-mal-ay) is more common than I care to think about.

At least this one has a sense of humor:

Dr. Harry Beaver OB/GYN in Virginia. Has two vanity plates. BVR DR and DR BVR

Then there is this one:

Dr. Bonnie Beaver, MD, Obstetrics and Gynecolgy, West Hills CA

Didn't find one in Omaha, though. Maybe it was one of these.

Along these lines (if a tad OT), for all of you "Leave It to Beaver" fans, how about that name, Beaver Cleaver? Fictional, sure--but what a colossal joke that turned out to be on a totally innocent public.

Here is one for all of you. This is the truth.
As mentioned as an option in an earlier thread - I did change my last name.
My last name was "Loser" it is pronounced "Low Sir"
I went to court and dropped the last name. Now my "last name" is Quinn.

Whenever anybody calls my daughter Nichole by the name "loser" she looks at them very seriously and says... "Now tell me this. When you saw my name on that paper did you ever think to yourself - Is that really the way it's pronounced? Or are you so stupid that you thought I would really pronounce my name that way? It's pronounced "Low Sir", so now you know. Please don't ever make that mistake again."

I was truly going to name my first born:
Brian Orion Robert Nathaniel Loser - now think about it and what do you get with the abbreviations of his name..."B.O.R.N. Loser"
He ended up being Justin - My wife wouldn't have it the other way.
Thanks - Gregory Quinn

Names are fun sometimes

Just had to jump in when I discovered this thread.
A friend and former (female) coworker of mine has the last name Butt. Her boyfriend's last name is Krak. If they ever marry, she could legitimately be Mrs Butt-Krak.
I'm not making this up.

Friend of mine brought me a Manning, SC newapaper one day....said read the police report...4th name down. I couldn't believe it;

Scientific Knowledge Supreme was arrested for shoplifting.

I keep that newspaper for verification because nobody believes me.

My brother in-laws brother has a son they named D'artanyon (the three musketeer)
His sister named her daughter Zander
My neice named her daughter Napolean (no kidding)

Give to poor kids a break and give them NORMAL names. If you want a weird name change your own.

Just two.

Back in the late 70s or early 80s, the chief news editor at the CBS News Washington Bureau was Ralph Hedline.

At about the same time, the man in charge of handling the public relations disaster for Babcock & Wilcox, the firm that designed the nuclear power plant at Three Mile Island, was named Peter R. Miracle, that is, P.R. Miracle.
