On the hunt for another 1911

Problem I have (and it's totally mental and probably irrational) is the Kimber Commander's 4-inch barrel. 1/4 inch isn't much, but I have a mental block about going below the 4.25 inch barrels used on almost every other Commander. Contrary input is always welcome.

One big reason I own Kimbers is barrel fitting. The slide lock always looks like this.

What's that you ask? The two marks are the barrel lugs fit to the slide stop, greatly improves accuracy. Colt for instance uses the link-up method.(Fit a longer or shorter barrel link to get close. You'll see one band of shine in the middle of the stop. Like the second picture.

All mine are Colt pistols. I've owned/shot other brands but due to one problem/issue or another I let them go and kept the Colts. All mine are .45's, too. Colt 1911 (1917 US Army pistol), Colt Combat Commander (made sometime in the 70's). Colt Series 80 (stainless steel) made in the mid 80's.)

No point in arguing brands and no point in snobbery and "prancing pony" remarks. With the exception of one Les Baer, all my 1911s are Colt and in the .45 ACP chambering. They may cost a little more, but I've had very good results with Colt 1911s for decades and can't see a reason to switch. They're accurate and function well. The same can probably be said for some of the copies, but the original maker still puts out good products.

I have 2 Kimber and a Colt. My Colt is Custom shop 1 of 100. I won't carry that. Hate to have to use it then lose it.

My four inch Eclipse Pro is usually about 1500 bucks. It is still available from Mazama's Sporting Goods in Oregon on their online store. It's the listing that has no picture. The gun is new old stock. The last time I price checked it, it was still $956.00.

The steel that Colt uses is great. It's a little more malleable than some of the more brittle steels out there. I used to buy old ones back in the 90's. Smith em and Flip em.

StillCrazy, if you sign up for daily alerts you can get in on killer sales. cci lawman brass 230gr fmj 15.99 ea on sale, but you have to get it as soon as you get the flyer. I also find 45acp at that price point at battlehawk and sometimes aim. The same brand in 9mm was 10.99. Recently I just picked up 4 cases of Aguilla 9mm 115gr jhp for 15.99 a box. Normally I use TZz brand ammo, but when I find good ammo cheap I jump. Yesterday I found blazer 9mm 124gr fmj at 10.49 a box. Now, if your OK with steel cases I've seen it plenty at 9.75 A BOX but I tend to avoid steel. I think my best deal to date at PSA was their 9mm service grade, 50/bx for 9.99.

BTW, my UPS driver really hates delivering to my house. Great prices at battlehawk added with free shipping over a set amount is a bargain. What really got me on my ups drivers bad side was battlehawks sale on 45 Colt blazer 250gr fmj for 32 a box of 50.

At near 75 I don't have problems with .45 or even .45 Super, but someday I might.

I bought a Tisas Aviator last year - works good and is accurate enough - it didn't stay a 9mm long as I added a Barrel in Super .38 but I still have the orginal barrel.

I don't carry it but it works well enough to carry. This is the way it came, group at 25 yards.



Sadly, they quit listing the Aviator, I would have like one in .45 as well.

Come over to the 1911 forum and you will find lots of people like the Tisas, very few complaints. Forged frames and slides, if that matters and normally 100% reliability. You will also find that people who own custom guns, $3-$5K, all seem to have a Tisas or two.
