Does anyone remember the classic TV show "Adam 12" that ran from 11/21/1968 to 8/26/1975? What S&W sidearm did Pete Malloy (Martin Milner) and Jim Reed (Kent McCord) carry?

Since LAPD provided the technical advisors for "Adam 12", it would be reasonable to believe that they would suggest authentic issued sidearms. They were most often seen with 6" M14 revolvers, and occasionally, with the later 4" M15 revolvers.

In the first and second seasons, they both had 6 inch Model 14 K38s and 2 inch Model 36s.

The Patrol car shotguns (they carried two) were Ithaca Model 37s.

In the SWAT episode (remember, SWAT was started by LAPD about that time), they also had M16s.

Later in the series, the duty revolvers were changed to four inch Combat Masterpiece Model 15s.

The guns used were standard issue for LAPD at the time.

You might also note that Martin Milner has a set of Fuzzy Farrant grips on his 6" Model 14 starting about the second episode.
They also used clamshell holsters later on in the series.

I recall they also carried the regulation L.A.P.D. baton too. My favorite impact weapon, in spite of being an ASP instructor.

SWAT using model 16s? I didn't know that such a rare gun was used as a prop. Also, aren't 32s a little small for SWAT?

Ron MCarthy is an LAPD SWAT plank holder and taught the first SWAT school I attended. The early LAPD SWAT semi-rifles were Colt AR15s. After an unfortunate shooting were one SWAT officer wounded another with the AR15 in a close quarters situation LAPD purchased the H&K MP5 and expanded into the full auto arena.

One of my early mentors was a 30 year road bunny on the Port Angeles Washington PD. He carried a well worn Model 16 for around 20 years of that time. I saw many raised eyebrows when people noticed it was a 32 but the table full of trophies and first place medals made one believe he could place those little 32 rounds where he wanted them. It wouldn't be my choice for carry but I never felt he wasn't capable of saving my life if it became necessary.

OK smart guys. What did Gunther Toody (Joe E. Ross) and Francis Muldoon (Fred Gwynne)carry in the series "Car 54 Where Are You"?

Welllll, Mass, I suppose that Fred as Herman Munster didn't need to carry. Or did he take one of your classes? Herman could probably have concealed a Desert Eagle 50.

Loved Dragnet, which spun off Adam 12, which I liked also.

When I was very young, I though Car 54 was hilarious.

fred Gwynn was a great actor.

Yes, but can your sing (to yourself please) the Car 54 theme song?

"There's a holdup in the Bronx, Brooklyn's broken out in fights...."

Dragnet started many years before Adam 12. It didn't "spin off" from any tv show. In fact, Dragnet originated on radio as a drama series before making the jump to tv.

I had to correct you on this, otherwise, Jack Webb will rise out of his grave on Halloween and come looking for you.

Chuck Norris is afraid of Jack Webb.

LOL, Barney didn't need a gun, his whole body was a weapon. Seriously, without going back to watch the show again, I'm going to guess a M&P model 10 in .38 special.

think he ment Adam 12 spun off FROM Dragnet, correct or not I dont know

I've heard folks who've seen Barney with an M&P, but I mostly remember a Colt OP, sometimes 4" barrel and sometimes longer, or maybe it was a 4" in a 6" swivel holster.

"There's a holdup in the Bronx,
Brooklyn's broken out in fights.
There's a traffic jam in Harlem
That's backed up to Jackson Heights.
There's a scout troop short a child,
Kruschev's due at Idlewi-i-ild --
Car 54, where ARE yo-o-ou?"

Whoever did the theme song apparently didn't have much concept of precincts, and Toody and Muldoon must have been the only RMP cops in the city to be on call to cover all the boroughs...

:-)

I may have read the "spun off" wrong. Oops!
I apologize. I will let Jack Webb know that I was wrong. He can be very intimidating.

I was referring to the military M16 rifle, .223 caliber, not the Model 16 S&W K32 masterpiece. Duh.

In the first episode he carried a 4" service revolver, in the rest I believe he carried a Colt snubbie.

I won't put any money on that however.

I just bought a Colt Python with Fuzzy grips on it. They are great looking grips.
Sorry did not mean to hijack thread, we now return you to it.

yep, that is what I meant. probalby a comma or so would have clarified that. Jack Webb produced Adam 12, and was in several episodes also along with Harry Morgan.
