One In Ten is the number of people that I know who practice regularly at a range.

Now, there can be several reasons why they don't get there more frequently such as the availability/cost of ammo, family matters etc.... But I think that regardless of the reason, they need to get to the range more often. Some of them practice every six months or so!

"The proficient use of a firearms is a perishable skill". How many times have you heard that?. Well it's true.

I admit that I don't shoot as much as I used to. Used to go at least once a week. Sometimes twice. But the lack of ammo and family matters are such that I can't. I get there every other week. And when I go I focus on the quality. Not quantity of ammo I shoot.

So I couldn't help but wonder about the forum members here?

Like you, I go for quality. Trigger control, sight picture etc. Newbie with no tactical training as of yet. Starting draw at the range now. I shoot pretty well, but of course it is all static at this point. Working my way up to more advanced stuff. Lot of dry fire also. Able to go every 4-6 weeks. 50-100 rounds per.

When the weather permits, I may find myself at the range three to four times a week. I alternate firearms, as well as rifle and handgun. With ammo prices as they are, I've certainly been much more frugal than I used to be. Now even with my 317 or 10-22, it will be a box of 50, then done for the day.

I can't imagine owning a firearm for defensive purposes and NOT practicing regularly, however "regularly" is defined. I'd say a CCW holder should be out shooting at least twice a month to stay fresh, and practicing at home with snap caps, holstering, etc. But that's my opinion, and far from the norm for lots of folks who aren't in our fraternity of gun aficionados.

Good point. These are ALL CCW carriers that I'm talking about.

+1. I go to the range every Sunday. I work 6 days/80 hours a week. I am not going to use that as a reason NOT to go the range when I can. I need all the practice I can get right now and would be at the range at least one more day a week if my work schedule permitted. I take my time when I am there and don't rush through the ammo I take with me. Going to take a Defensive handgun class in the next month or two.

The range I go to is over an hour away longer if i hit traffic but I go about 3x a month and average about 2 to3 hundred rounds per visit.

I'm about exactly like you. I used to go at least once a week and sometimes more, but with shortage of some reloading components other commitments, I probably only go every other week now. Wish it was more, cause I always come away happy!

I'm out at least once a week, twice if I can make it. Good ranges are hard to find in my city. Mine is about a 45min drive each way, just north of the city. Still more than worth the drive.

I have a doctor friend in NC who works long and irregular hours. Also, his range is closed on Sundays so he is lucky to get out once every month or two.

I own my own farm and my range is one step out my back door, I try to practice with at least one magazine or cylinder worth every day.

Time for me to move out of the city I guess. :D
I read that Doc Holiday used to practice like that after he felt he was good. Every morning he'd go out and fire just 6 shots.

As a martial artist I know that focused quality training beats unfocused training any day. There is also something to be said for frequency. One of my art's masters was once asked if a person only had an hour a week to train how he should train, and the answer was, if you only have an hour a week to train, 10 minutes a day, six days a week is better than one hour a week once a week.

I get to train 1-2 times per month, and a tactical class every 6months. Additionally I hold advanced belts in Karate and judo, and in some instances the worst thing a perp could do is get witin arms reach.;)

Wow, I am jealous that many of you get to go that often. I go at least once a month and most often one other time. Ammo price, and as of late availability, has been the biggest factor for me. Being in grad school, owning a home, and having a kid have really left ammo funds tight lol. I practice a lot at home with a case resting on the tip of my firearm, I cannot remember who showed me this method. But it has really helped to smooth out my trigger pull on my Semi-auto. I dig snap caps for my wheel-gun, but I wish they could make some that would actually shoot out a foot or 2 like a dart!

Use to go weekly. But due to a new job, coaching the kids teams etc, I get out once or twice a month.

I'm retired, I go to the range 4 or 5 times a week. I'm starting IDPA shooting next week so that will be a once a month thing. I shoot a variety of calibers but always shoot at least 2 mags (normally more) of my 9c which is my EDC. I don't have competing vices, my wife likes to shoot as well (but not as often) and I don't like golf or motor homes. :D

Every other Thursday I shoot trap. Sometimes I will shoot my HD gun also but I usually practice with my HD gun once a month.

Due to some "life changes" my range visits are somewhere between "once a month" and "too long to remember". Not good I know but it's what life dealt me. However I do handle my firearms and do some dry firing and presentations every week.
