One year ago tonight my wife suffered a stroke and nothing much has been the same since. Good news to me is she is at about 75-80% physically and about 90% mentally recovered.
The stroke was caused by being off her blood thinner for A-fib for a few days so she could have a nerve block to help with some back problems. It messed up two arteries in the right side of her brain and left her left side paralyzed. Didn't even think about messing up her talking, must be the strongest muscles in her body. At about a week and a half she started getting her fingers and hand back. They would mostly move, when and where she wanted them. Got to come home after in hosp. therapy third week of Aug. and things coasted along ok for a few days until she went totally off the deep end from a UTI. Never knew one of those could make someone that loony. Back in the hosp for another 5 days. Got to bring her home the evening of our anniversary, in time for our anniversary dinner.
Things went along ok for a few days until she fell out of bed trying to sit up, cracked ankle. Now we are dealing with stroke and orthopedic boot. Things ok for a week or so then she starts acting weird again. Back to the hosp, Doc says no UTI but something is not right, back in hosp for another couple of days. This time it was potassium level had bottomed out. Couple of bags of potassium juice and she started acting more normal.
Sept and Oct were just mindless blurs of Dr appt., in home therapy and no sleep. Every couple of hours it was wake up get her in the wheel chair, into the bathroom, out of the wheel chair, back into the wheelchair, into the bedroom out of chair and into bed. This was life for me until about thanksgiving when she finally got enough leg movement back to go to the bath room with her walker. Didn't Know what to do with a full nights sleep.
Things are better. She is able to walk around the house now and do some of the things she could do last year before 7-14.
I would like to thank all of you who kept her in your prayers over the last year and ask that you remember both of us still. (especially my sanity) Sorry this is so long but it has been a long year. Thanks Larry
