I live in Virginia if it matters,

I have at least 2 people I know who said they've gotten their CCW permit online without going to their local courthouse etc. etc.

I have another acquaintance who is wanting to get their CCW permit and says they can do it online.

Are these real? I personally wouldn't go this route and I question the security and privacy of applying online.

Anyone here get theirs online instead of going the paper route?

My opinion

Following is my opinion only and I am not a lawyer.

1. Virginia is a "shall issue" State, meaning that if there is no valid reason for you (the applicant) to NOT be issued a permit, then the State is obligated to issue you one.

2. The "on-line" courses that you see (example: carryvirginia.com) are nothing more than someone taking your $28.00 to fill out an APPLICATION form that you can do for free on-line yourself. They advertise that "their form" is accepted at all Virginia courthouses. So what!

3. As you probably know the form requires your fingerprints (can't be done on-line) and it requires you to demonstrate firearms basic proficiency via your military DD-214 or similar, OR a certificate from an accredited training institution.

4. Once YOU have personally presented all above to your local officials (Sherriff, courthouse, chief of police, etc.) AND present your $50 application fee...............then it is all submitted to background checks, etc. and maybe....just maybe....

5. In 4 or 5 weeks (sometimes more sometimes less) you will get your permit valid for 5 years in the US Mail.

I've been a Virginia resident for 32 years and have not seen anything different than above.

Summary: download the application and fill it out on your own computer (all instructions are downloaded with the form). Why blow $28.00 (or more....a lot more in some of the ads) on something you can do for free.

There is no free lunch.

Hope this helps, and again..........I'm not a lawyer so ALL above advice is worth just exactly what you paid for it.

Yes, an online course works there. Even a Hunter's Ed course is enough proof of firearms proficiency for Virginia.
I live just across the line in TN and I've taught several modified NRA 4-hour basic handgun courses in VA to less qualified shooters who wanted more than a quick online course. I included live fire, but VA doesn't require that.
VA also accepts military service or a letter from a club or range master as proof of proficiency.
If the county clerk knows you and knows you're a gun guy, that's probably enough.

The fingerprint requirement is enough to show it's on the bogus side, not to mention the FBI background check.

It will depend on where you live. In Kalif for example, that would not work. If applying for say a Florida NR permit, that would not work. You can apply for a Florida NR yourself & it will be good in like 35 states. Unless there is a state agency attached to the permit, I bet it will NOT be valid in other states. If there is no fingerprint & background requirement, then it is 100% bogus. You will get a card that says ccw on it & then when you show it to the LEO that stops you, he will LOL while applying the cuffs.

Thanks for the replies,

I was thinking it was 'too good to be true'

I had proof of proficiency (competed in shooting competitions) and my wife had to take the course at NRA, not to mention the fingerprints.

Those who said it was available on line must have been leaving out some info to me.

I'll pass the info on.

Or they have a ccw card that means nothing.

I know it used to be possible to get a VA permit online. Many out-of-staters like myself would do that to gain reciprocity on other states where our resident states were lacking.

Is it the way I got my Florida Permit? I applied on line. They sent a packet. I sent back a completed application, fingerprint card, and certificate of handgun training. After they processed I got my license in the mail.

If you live in one state and get a CCW permit from another state then you have a " NON-Resident " permit . many states do NOT accept them . I moved from Az to Tx . Tx accepted my " now " non resident az permit . But when traveling to florida , I found that Louisiana , Mississippi , Alabama , Georgia and Florida did NOT accept my non resident Az permit . So , if you get one and decide to do some traveling , best check first with each state you will be traveling through and in to . Also , check with your home state , you might be surprised . I now have a Tx permit . Regards, Paul

FL also is/was a photo ID (passport type), that you supplied along with the rest of the application packet, fingerprint card etc.

Are any other states not a photo ID? Wouldn't make a lot of sense NOT to have a photo.

I just received my Virginia CCW permit. In my rural county I found no provision for on-line application. Since the permits are issued in the County Clerks Office, possibly larger counties provide for on-line application. In my case no fingerprint card was required. Just a photo ID, proof of county residence, an application form and DD-214 (in my case). Took just under 4 weeks.

If you are really interested in a Virginia CCW then do as others have posted...go to the Virginia State Police official site and download the APPLICATION FORM (SP-248). Before actually hitting the download button, read the complete instructions (i.e. item 7 allows an on-line course by a Certified outfit to be submitted as proof of handgun competency). There are other rules, restrictions, etc. plainly spelled out but the bottom line is that you must check with the authorities in ther county or city YOU reside in.

There are different requirements for Non-Resident. My particular county required fingerprints years ago, may or may not these days, I don't know because Virginia allows RENEWAL, by US Mail.

Our (or at least mine) CCW permits are NOT photo, but the rules are also clear...........anytime you are carrying you MUST HAVE government issued photo id along with your CCW permit.

Again....if you are really interested in a Virginia Resident CCW look up the Application form and read all the stuff before contacting your county officials.

If I am travelling I also check the latest for the States I'm travelling through. I usually feel naked when driving over to visit SIL and daughter in Ohio because there is a very short stint after leaving Paw Paw West Virginia where you drive into Cumberland Maryland....and Maryland seems not to recognize anyone, any state, or any rules other than you better not even have a live round of ammo, say nothing of a firearm.

Just me.....but that's why I have a couple "stash" guns located at distant relatives where they do honor VA permits.

In IOWA you can fill out the paperwork and take the written exam on - line. You then receive an appointment to appear at the sheriff's office to pay for the permit and give a finger print. Very painless, fast, easy........
