Operation Overflight

I just finished reading the book operation Overflight by Gary Powers. apart from the diary in the prison a couple of things were mentioned.


there was a concern that the Russians always knew when there was going to be an overflight. it turns out that a couple of CIA guys defected to Russia that could have supplied that information.


when the U-2's were flying out of Japan there was a Marine radar operator that had available to him a lot of the U-2 flight information. he was transferred to California and it turns out a lot of the information was still available to him. this radar operator also defected to Russia in 1959. this operators name was Lee Harvey Oswald which is a name I'm sure everybody has heard before.

Had not heard that before. I knew Oswald was a communist, you'd think the FBI would have been all over that one. Sad.

Why they ever let him back into the US bewilders me.

A GI with high level security clearance defects to the Evil Empire and then unexceptionably comes back into his home/expatriated country with his Russian bride and child. He then does questionable acts (attempted murder of a federal official, as per Texas Rangers) and media verified protests against anti Cuba sentiment and the US GOV? No doubt there was collusion somewhere. The Warren Commission be damned!
