I just finished watching The Loner which starred: Lloyd Bridges. The series was created by Rod Serling of The Twilight Zone fame--and he also wrote several episodes. It's billed as a "adult Western" and can get VERY slow at times. It lasted for 26 episodes having one that was a 2-parter. The series did have many very good guests in it like: Dan Duryea, James Whitmore Sr, the three Bridges kids-Jefff, Beau and his daughter. Also had others like: Pat Conway, -the former "Sheriff of Tombstone Territory--, Leslie Neilsen, John Hoyt etc.
The series had a new idea which I liked--which showed what today is known as PTSD--also showed racial issues in at least 2 episodes--etc. I liked the idea but--as against what Serling wanted--not enough gun play. Speaking of guns--looked like everything was period correct though im NO expert.
The bad thing and is my opinion only--the series was too slow-and no Gunsmoke-that's for sure. Nelson Riddle wrote the theme-he was the one who did Batman theme as well--or rather-background music. Some of the better episodes were directed by Don Taylor--who also had been an actor. The last episode had Howard de Silva as the Sheriff of the town of "Mecca" who was hunting down those who destroyed his town. Bruce Dern was one of the baddies as it turned out.
I think my favorite episode is a tossup between the one who starred: Brock Peters-who was a Union Army soldier just mustered out and going to live with his father who was murdered by the forerunner of the kkk. The other favorite would probably be one of the first episodes which starred Whit Bissell as a former Confederate officer.
The series must have been on a VERY strict budget-and it showed it too. The acting in some eps--sucked-except for the star and any good guests that may have been in the ep.
Of 26 episodes, I liked maybe around 5-6 at best-mainly because of the guest star. The Pat Conway, Whit Bissell episodes come to mind.
Advice--save your money if your thinking of buying the dvds? Al will be the recipient of this series and may like it more then I did.
This series BTW, was shown in a bad spot Sat nights at 9:30 PM--and believe it or not? was the "lead-in" show for: Gunsmoke.
I finished Gunsmoke seasons 1-4-about a week ago-and is depressing to say the least. Next is Custer--only God knows now--how ill fell about that series. When im done with torture--ill be watching Tombstone Territory or Maverick-again.
Edit to add again-currently watching Custer-=and it aint bad at all.
