Star Trek

My dad always described Star Trek as Gunsmoke in outer space. Kirk, Doc McCoy and Spock were the counterparts for Matt Dillon, Doc Adams and Festus.

Never thought about the similarities with the characterizations.

I read somewhere, when the series was in development, that Roddenberry tried to sell the series to doubtful TV execs as a "Wagon Train" to the stars.

I remember how Star Trek was cancelled after the third season and right after that Armstrong was seen via television walking on the moon! But it was too late. People across the country were practically begging for the show to return. It stayed in syndication forever after that. Took another ten years for the first movie to hit the theaters.

First Generation Trekker here, September 5, 1966 on our then B&W TV-remember those? Gene Roddenberry described it as "Wagon Train to the Stars". In the later series they tried to get away from the "happy crew" idea, recognizing that military units are rarely a band of brothers.

I guess it makes sense it has some similar characteristics to Westerns. Gene Roddenberry was a writer for 'Have Gun - Will Travel'.

The wife and I have rewatched every episode of every series up to Enterprise with our two youngest daughters. I avoided Voyager when it first came out. 20 years later I have to say it has some of the best episodes in the whole franchise. I draw the line at anything that came out after Enterprise, though. I hated the new movies and I am not interested in Discovery or Picard from what I have seen.
If you liked Star Trek, Farscape, or Lexx, you should watch Andromeda. It has some cheesy moments and a few seasons where the show falters but it is an underrated gem overall.

I always thought that the Andromeda avatar was really hot! That still didn't compel me to tune in very often!

Farscape reruns just started locally on broadcast TV. I prefer my Muppets in old run down theaters! My BFF and I act like Waldorf and Statler! (not such a good thing in church!)
