While I have been looking for a Mod 27 or 28 6" (and passed on a VERY NICE 27 in 5"!!) I was in a local pawn shop the other day and they have a pretty nice 586-3 in 6". I really like the full lug and it had a very interesting set of aftermarket grips that were wood but were 'speckled' in the grip area. Anyway opinions on the 586, good, bad etc. will be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not sure what one could criticize about the 586, and its brethren the 581, 681 and 686. I would argue that these guns are among the top 5 revolvers ever made in the history of firearms.

According to the SCS&W the -3 would date it from 1988 to 1993. This means it's a pre-lock model, which increases its value to collectors and shooters alike. And the 6" pipe means that even higher powered rounds won't wear your wrist out in short order. There is a nearly endless supply of grips out there, from the original service grips to rubber grips to fancy grips in just about every possible material.

The 586 should have adjustable target sights, so you'll just want to make sure they're zeroed well.

In short: you'd be hard pressed to go wrong with a 6" 586-3.

Well maybe I'll go drop some green on the glass and see if they 'accept' - they are asking $729 but that seems high.

Yep - I have many sets of S & W grips and maybe I'll have some that fit this - I think K frame grips will fit an 'L' frame - but correct me if I am wrong.

I've got a 586-1 M from 1987. Fantastic revolver, a real classic, and a very good shooter.

*I* think $729 is bit high but then I paid $700 for a 686-4 in 6" a few years back because it was a local deal and I could see and even shoot it before buying. So what do I know ...?

If it's nice, you probably should buy it.

I haven't followed the market for 586's, but if I knew of a pre-lock 686 in the same configuration at $729, I'd be tripping over myself to get it. That said, you might consider throwing six Benjamin Franklins on the counter and gauging their reaction.

Do you know if it comes with the box and papers? For a gun like this (that isn't old enough to be "old," but too old to be "new"), not having the box and papers (and lacking the original grips) would give you bargaining chips.

$729 may be a little high but not exceptionally so. I own two 586's, a 4" no dash & 6" -1. Both are exceptional shooters and quite frankly I wouldn't sell either one for less .

I recently paid $700 for this 686-3 with no box, but in otherwise excellent condition. :)

As first-model mentioned, you have some bargaining chips with the 586 missing its factory stocks. See if you can take advantage of the situation and pick up one of Smith & Wesson's finest Distinguished Combat Magnums! :D

I'm a huge fan of the 586/686. Love the full lug. Makes shooting hot loads a lot more bearable. Two guns I probably shoot the most these days are a 8 3/8" 686 and a 7" 686. With Red Dot Sights and the right load, they are scary accurate and pleasant to shoot. $729 is on the high side, but I've probably got around $850 in my 7" which is a -2 after paying for the barrel swap and having it drilled and tapped.

I have a586 3in and a 686 6in both can outshoot me. You can not go wrong with this revolver.

Dont let a few buck scare you away from it if its what you want. Dont be like me and many others on here who let one go and regret it.

The 586's are great. The price is not out of line, but it all depends on how much you want it. If you care but not that much, make an offer and walk away if they don't accept. BTW more than likely a pawn store gave half of the marked price or even less. They are usually prepared to negotiate a deal on items

I have several 586 and 686 pistols and I think they are one of the best pistols ever made as stated above. Accurate, durable, great lines and a pleasure to shoot in both DA and SA. Can't go wrong in my opinion.
