Update in post #37...

This Model 28 appears to be from 1958 (?) according to the serial number was advertised as 100% unfired by the gentleman that has it. The seller is not at all into guns, so I asked for pics.

Now obviously, since there is a slight turn ring, and a whole bunch of dings on the bottom of the grips and also what appears to be a little piece missing from the left grip panel on the rear edge of the checkering, the gun is not 100% by any means. Finish appears to be satin. Whether it is unfired, I can't tell for sure.

I am also unsure about the barrel length. Does it look like a full 6" barrel?

What I would like to know is if you folks think it is an original and unmolested gun (sights, grips, barrel, etc) and what you feel a fair price would be?

Having a hard time getting pics to load................

It looks like a 6" barrel to me, and the finish is very nice. The "turn ring" is minimal and could be just from dry firing. The bottom of the grips look good to me and the dings could be from handling the gun.

Ask the seller to take photos of the face of the cylinder and the recoil plate, which would show marks if the gun has been fired to any degree.

Early 58 seems correct. As the 28 had a dull blue finish, that part is correct. It looks like 6" barrel which is also correct. I doubt it is unfired. Sight unseen, I'd say a price in the neighborhood of $400 would be reasonable, at least for me to consider a purchase.

Ouch! $400? I don't believe there has been a M28 in even 50% sell that low in quite some time (at least on GB)

I will say that he is asking $700 and it has no box or papers. If it was truly unfired and complete, I wouldn't have a problem with that price. Without being complete and without it being 100% I am certainly on the fence about it.

Anyone else have price opinions?

Looks like a trigger shoe has been added - That wouldn't normally be consistent with a gun that has not been fired. Looks like it has been played with some. Still a very nice example. I would think $500 anyway. The diamond Magna grips are worth $100.

Very nice and relatively early 6" example of one of my all time favorite revolvers. Thanks for the post.
California has its own special problems, relative to gun ownership and purchase. That revolver, with no box or tools would probably be a $600 gun up here in Alaska. I see them from time to time at guns shows for less than $500, but not in quite that nice of condition.
The attached photo shows a 6" Highway Patrolman that my wife got for me after buying a winning church raffle ticket for $10. I love my wife!!!! :) But I would guess you can't use this example for determining the current market value for the 6" HP!

LEO918,

Good catch. I forgot to mention that. That also was a tell tale to me that it is not "unfired".

Let me ask you folks something else.

Would the prices you are stating change any if it was a like condition Model 27?

It looks to be in great shape to me. Maybe 95%+ condition from what we can see? If unfired with box and papers, it might sell for $700. Only a little less if fired. Prices will vary by location of course.
Just my .02 worth. A very nice gun with original era grips. If serialized to the gun, that would up the value to most of us I believe.

Looks pretty decent from my angle. Much more than 400 where I am.

Looks like a nice 6" 4-screw gun to me. However, the grips look a bit long in a couple of the photos. It may just be the photo angle, but I would not be surprised if they did not number to the gun. In general, people who put trigger shoes on their guns tended to shoot them, even though this gun does not appear to have been shot much...

Price estimate $600 - $700 as is, even if the stocks do not number to the gun.

A 4-screw Model 27 in the same condition and configuration should set you back $250 to $300 more...

My $0.02,

I would spend 550-600 on that gun tops, HP's aren't extremely common here but they aren't super pricey either.
If I am paying over 600 I am gonna step it up to a 27.
Looks to me like a gun that was toted often and shot little.
Doesn't mean it's perfect and to be honest I like a little earnest wear on mine.
Makes me feel less guilty when I shoot the hell out of them.

I have to agree with the six hundred tops. It is in nice shape but it's not perfect. It is a 6" gun, and the 4" version seem to be going a little higher lately. The action on this era guns is amazing!

Where can you find an S prefix Model 28 in that kind of shape for $400 these days?

The pictured 28 is a very nice condition no dash example that should sell in the $600 range easily.

i agree with rkmesa...the first thing I noticed was the stock-fit....regardless of original stocks the gun is well over the $500 mark and probably closer to $600....
