Optics help

I have a very nice trijicon reflex site for my S&W15t, but I am now in need of something for longer distances (300-500)yards for some good old rock chuck, yote, and jack rabbits. I wont be using it more than a few weekends a year so I really dont want to spend a small fortune on it. I am trying to stay in the 500 dollar range and stumbled upon Burris AR-536 5x 36mm Prism Sight Ballistic CQ Reticle Matte. Has anyone tried this? If so what do you think of it? I have been reading the other optics thread as well, and it has given me other ideas as well. As always, thank you for your input.

If you are serious about 300-500yd shooting, then look to scopes which have turrets which can reset to zero and work quickly.
And, if you are looking for groundhogs at 500yds, I will recommend an optic of at least a 12x magnification. Shooting a tennis ball at 500yds is no small feat.

I agree with rojo,small game at those distances will require high magnification and a lot of practice.Ammunition should also be considered.I can't speak on Burris but i'd recommend taking a look at the vortex viper hs 4-16x44 30mm or the viper 6.5-20x44 30mm. Leupold and Nikon also have some nice glass in your price range.

For the same amount of $$$ you could get a Nikon 4-16X42.
Nikon M-223 Rifle Scope 4-16x 42mm
I have one and does a very good job.

Thank you all for the input. As you can tell I know very little about longer rang optics. I will look into the nikon as well as a few others with a minimum of a 12x. Once again thank you.

I'm going to be the fly in the ointment here, so please don't take offense. For the critters you mention and the ranges stated, I'd go with a long barrel bolt gun, say 22-250 or .243, and 4 X 16 ish quality scope. It's not that you won't be able to hit them with the AR, but a rifle built for long range is more likely to give a quick clean kill, being more humane to the critter.

Now for the stuff a little closer, the recommendation for the Nikon P223 scope in either variant, 3 X 32 or 4 X 16, would be great.

Gunny you are right. My friends and I had not considered the humane factor for the little critters. We all do have long guns that we normally use for the long shots but had a little wager on who could hit the longest target with the ar platform. Thank you for being "the fly in the ointment" it truly is appreciated.
