I'm one of those folks who "isn't paranoid but expects Murphy's Law in full force." Ordered a case of Federal 9mm "Champion" because I could spare the coin this month. I've got 4-5K on hand but in the past I've held 10-15K routinely. Not being "green" I ordered 20 box/50 instead of "bulk" 1K in a box. Shooting from a bulk box is like eating potato chips out of the bag, gone in no time. The pain is not so much the $340 price; it's the $30.52 extra for tax and insurance, almost a 10% "surcharge." I'm sure glad cases are "free shipping." Checking "my orders" I bought 2 cases in early 2020 for $169 with $1.71 added for insurance, no tax. "Inflation?" At least "rationing" keeps me shooting pretty much the year on a case. Joe

The shipping charges are probably very comparable to what you might otherwise pay in sales taxes for a purchase at your local dealer. I pay attention to "shipping and handling", but primarily because so many sellers seem to use that as a secondary profit source.

Put it on your preferred customer credit card and get 2% cash back! Helps to keep your FICO score up high!

What's in your wallet? Especially after buying a case of ammo these days?

I keep an eye on ammoseek.com. I grabbed a case (of boxes) of brass 124 gr for under $300 all in a few weeks ago. Off-brand stuff, but it will just be for plinking around, and saving the good stuff for later. Was supposed to try it out yesterday, but too much rain!

I have yet to buy any ammo since the price skyrocketed into the outer stratosphere in 2020. The last case of 9mm I bought was $ 189/1000 with free shipping. I think late 2019

You think that's bad, just wait. I think high inflation is only just beginning.

That’s why I bought it. I’ve got a few thousand rounds here that I got between $5 and $8.50/box. Didn’t need it but didn’t need it then either. Next year we might look at $18.50/box as a bargain. Joe

Picked up 3 more boxes of 45 ACP ball at GT Distributors for $29/ box. No other place has it unless almost 3 times the price.

I can make you feel better about this, and even about ordering another couple cases right now. Serious.

You say you have about 5000 rounds. Thats 100 boxes. Taking your high of 8.50 a box ( you can figure out the actual costs to take this even lower) you paid 850.00 for 5000 rounds. ( 100 boxes)

Now you paid almost 400.00 for a 1000 rounds. Im going to use that figure for a round number.
You have 1250.00 into 6000 rounds. ( 120 boxes total now)

You have a total of 10.41 per box, (dollar cost averaged).

Add a couple more cases ( total of 160 boxes) and do the math. 12.81 a box with a total of 2050.00 for 8000 rounds total. Not bad. ( hope I didn't screw up my math!)

Over time, It works for stocks. Over time It'll work for ammo. At any rate, it has worked for me on nearly everything over the past few decades.

Go get a couple more cases if you'll use it. Because you're right. It may be more down the road, but even if it goes down.....
YOU are ahead.

Dollar cost average.

An hour late (sarcasm). Ordered on 4/27, 6 days with a weekend in it. Joe

Opened up a case of the same ammo to restock my "shooting stash." Found these tucked under the resealed flap. Dated 8/16/2001, a month before the terrorist attack 9/11. i thought I was more careful to rotate stock. Paid $5 short of exactly triple the cost now compared to then. You should see the powder prices then. Moving forward is not necessarily progress. Joe

Pharmer, the bag of potato chips reference made me chuckle and how true. Any time I'd shoot with friends/family and brought an ammo can of loose rounds, well....mine became the community, help-yourself-pile. Fun times...but can be a bit much. I stopped this practice around 10 years ago ;)

Come to think of it, if I was reimbursed by all that said they would...
