Outdoorsman update with photos as requested

Kevin can probably speak to the accuracy of this, but I seem to remember sideplates are/were originally fit to the frame with a good whack with a babbitt rod. If that's the case, another whack will pop it right off.

Ralph Tremaine

The only thing I can say Ralph is it was hard to get off, the side plate and screws were heavily gummed up with old oil. I had to lightly tap the screw driver to loosen the plate screws even after soaking for 24 hrs.

You are asking me to remember something from decades ago. But, as I recall, the screws were removed and the babbit applied to the grip frame. Once you got over being shy, one good whack and it was off. Replacement was done with careful alignment and two thumbs pressing down.

Wacking the frame with a rubber mallet will take a lot of time. The Kunhausen book, when I read it about 25 years ago said to use the wooden hammer handle. I have a 2 OZ ball-peen I use frequently in my gun work, the handle is really chewed up from wacking S&W Frames. It works in just 2 or three normally, and really old stuck ones 5-6.
