Just wondering if any of you shoot +P ammo in your Sigma and if so have you had any problems with it? I have a SW40VE and I just don't want to break it. Thanks for your input!

If you look in your manual you'll see the Sigma is approved for "any commercial ammunition meeting SAAMI standards."
That includes +P. There are no SAAMI standards for +P+.

My SW40VE is reliable with any American ammunition I've tried in it, and my handloads that meet SAAMI specs.

S&W 40 +P seems to be an uncommon round. I never really considered it before but you prompted me to look it up. It looks like Buffalo Bore, CoreBon and Triton are the only ones that I found available. Do you have any others. Also according what I've read, they're not recommended in a Glock. Not being sure myself, I'gm wonderin if they're safe in the Sigma. I copied the below statement from Buffalo Bore's website.

SAFETY NOTICE

"Some pistols chambered for the 40 S&W cartridge may not provide complete support of the case head. If this condition exists, normal pressure loads such as those shown here can cause the case wall to bulge or rupture at the unsupported point. Contact your firearm manufacturer to determine if your pistol completely supports the case head, or ask a gunsmith to inspect your pistol before using it with ANY ammunition. It is the gun owners responsibility to know his firearm and its capabilities and limitations."

40 S&W WARNING

"This data is intended for use in firearms which fully support the cartridge in the chamber. Use of this data in firearms which do not fully support the cartridge may result in bulged cases, ruptured cases, case head separation, or other conditions which may result in damage to the firearm and/or result in injury or death of the shooter or bystanders."

Glock happens to chamber their 40 S&W pistols without a fully supported chamber and both of those above safety notices are likely aimed at Glock. I know of no other 40 S&W handguns being sold in the US that don't have fully supported chambers. If you really want to shoot our 40S&W ammo in your Glock, have an after market barrel that uses a supported chamber, dropped into it. This is a fairly common practice and will give you the safety margin needed to fire our ammo in your Glock. It will also likely give you more velocity than the factory Glock barrel. I personally own two Glock Model 23's. Both of mine are going to get after market barrels dropped in so that I can use this excellent ammo in them.

I have been looking at Corebon for home and self protection but did notwant to damage my Sigma by shooting a few boxes.

I think +p ammo is overrated. Do you really think a BG will know if you shoot him with a +p .40 or a standard .40?

For HD I use 147 grain standard pressure 9mm in my sigma. There in no sense in beating up your gun for a extra 100 fps. But that's just me.

I shot some Magtech Guardian Gold 155gr that were rated substantially higher velocity and energy than the 180gr Remingtons, Federals and Blazer I had been shooting. They were inaccurate, and the added recoil created a problem where the next round would jam into the feed ramp for some reason. I measured the OAL and they were all consistant, but towards the long side where my regular ammo was usually shorter, not sure if that had a difference.

I found the return to target time unacceptable as well, why shoot a guy once with a higher powered round when you can shoot him three times with a slower one?

We did some real world testing with this a few weeks back. With the 40 it is a real waste of money. The 40 is a high pressure round to begin with and the +p only makes it harder to control recoil and provides minimal benefits. We used a hind quarter from a pig and the standard 40 hollow points did nearly as well. The only thing the +p did was give an extra quarter to half inch of penetration. Mind you the standard rounds were going nearly 3 inches. Spent about $150 on various ammo and out of all the factory ammo we tested we decided the Remington UMC 180gr hollow points were the best bang for the buck. Now I did test fire a few of my old trust black talons and other than a nifty shredding action around the bullet there really wasn't much difference. So I put the remington's in all my mags and at $32 per 100 at wally world I can almost afford to practice with them. But for now I shoot a mag or 2 of them and then some of my reloads which have nearly identical point of impact.

Well darn if the FBI and other wimpy Americans could shoot a real round like the 10mm with out crying there would be no .40 S&W.

If you want a hotter .40 than go get a 10mm. Buy real ammo for it or load your own for a near .41 mag autoloader ballistics.

Other wise your kind of screwed.
