So I bought some pachmayr gripper grips for my 28-2 yesterday, and after fitting the frame snugly into the grooves provided I attempted to tighten the screw only to find that it runs directly into the mainspring.

Anyone have any experience with this issue? The box specifically said it would work will all N-frame S&Ws, so I'm kind of surprised by this outcome.

Don't go by what the box states; the grips themselves, on the inside, should be marked (usually the right-side) as to what gun they fit. It's always possible the grips got put in the wrong box. Now, if the grips read they're for an N-frame, make sure they're installed properly. If that still doesn't work, I don't know what else to tell you. Make sure the strain screw is tightened all the way? Is it a stock unmodified mainspring? Perhaps Pachmayr screwed up that batch of grips?

Yeah, it says Smith & W N Frame 2 right inside of the grips, and I made sure everything was seated correctly. I imagine it's an unmodified mainspring, but can't be sure because there were two owners previous and I only spoke to the last guy.

I have several sets of N-frame Pachmayr grips and some have a special screw that has a thined waist in the middle section to barely clear the mainspring. I lost one once and tried to use a standard full diameter gripscrew from a K-frame and it interfered. Also make sure that some "gunsmith" hasn't bent or bowed the leaf spring trying to adjust the the DA pull! I had this happen once and replaced it with a Wolff spring and no more cleareance problems. Slim
