Bought a new 642 last weekend for the helluvit. What's with S&W going to the cardboard box? All the other J frames I got in the past 5 years came in one of the nice plastic lockable cases...when did they go to cardboard..? Just curious and kinda disappointed, other than that no real big deal...guns stll great, lol

I'm sure when they changed from cardboard to plastic cases years ago, people complained about that too. Can't make everyone happy.

2010 was the last year for the revolver in plastic boxes.

Actually 2010 was the last year for the budget J frames in plastic boxes. Models such as the 625 are still shipping in the blue plastic boxes. The change to cardboard coincided with a big price drop on the low cost J frames. IIRC that price drop was in the ballpark of 100 dollars so I wouldn't flog S&W for saving perhaps 5-7 bucks by shipping these low cost models in cardboard boxes.

And you should note that the brown paper that the gun comes wrapped in is a vapor emitting corrosion preventative sheet. It should have a very faint odor. I don't know how important it is with stainless steel guns (I suppose that the internal springs are not stainless and could benefit). I guess that is a tradition that goes with both plastic and cardboard boxes.

Several years ago I bought a $3,000 pistol from Les Bear. It was a 1911 semi-auto in .45 caliber. It came in a plain cardboard box. I was so happy to get the gun, it could have come in a paper bag for all I cared.

Is it just me, or do I smell a box fetish?
