Dad was in Samoa when WW II started. He was a Marine but transferred to the Seebees with a friend who was a carpenter. IIRC friends father was the Union Business rep out of Dallas. He served in Samoa for 3 years until he got a tropical illness and rotated Stateside. He was a prison guard near San Francisco and hated it. He remembered seeing crates that everything came in marked APO San Francisco. On an off day he visited the plant and talked to an Officer. When they found out they had a carpenter with overseas time serving as a prison guard they requested him promptly and he finished out the war there.
He is long passed and never spoke of his time building crates.
