Just picked up a Model 36 which appears to have been parkerized. The seller claims it was his mother's and never been re-finished. But I can't find anything that says this model was ever available parkerized from the factory.

Any ideas on MFG. Date? SN 3940xx

If the mechanical condition is good and you don't mind the Park finish, that revolver is worth as much as any other like it that is not in pristine collectable condition. Not many are, and there are a huge lot of Model 36's in existence. There is absolutely not a thing wrong with the one you have there. In fact, it's kind of unique, if you stop and think about it. You can carry it and shoot it without concern, and if you take good care of it, it will continue to do it's job for a long time after you don't need it anymore. It's a nice looking revolver, as far as I am concerned. It's real value is what it's worth to you, especially if you bought it to use! It will give you great service.

Yeah I have a 36 that is WAY less pretty than yours. Did you buy it as an investment or as a firearm?

Since I already have a well used x-CHP Model 60, I was thinking more of an investment. I kept asking the seller about the finish and he swore it was his mom's....never been re-finished and it was always that way. Even the FFL guy said he didn't think it was re-finished. My wife has a re-blued Ruger Speed Six and you can tell it was re-finished. I was just thinking maybe this was a rare one from the factory. Should have consulted you gentlemen first.

I do like it though. Not as much as a nice blued one, but it's not horrible.

I wouldn't mind having your M36, it looks way better than my worn and pitted old Chiefs Special does. Being parkerized just makes it more of a business type gun instead of just a looker. Kinda like my Colt Agent here.

Nice gun! With that thumb latch, I'd guess 1966.

Other than the fact that it's not blued or nickeled, there's no telltale signs of a refinish. The markings, edges and sideplate fit look perfect. The screw holes aren't dished and the trigger and hammer appear to have their original case colors. Even the screw heads look untouched. That's a quality pistol rug too!

When you get it, pull the stocks and post good photos of the left side of the gripframe. I'm curious to see how it's marked.

The less appreciated square butt version of the ever popular M36. I have owned at least 6-8 round butt Chiefs Specials over the past 35 years, but only acquired a square butt version as a gift about a decade ago. It dates circa 1974, in very, very good condition. It is the only J frame that I keep, carry, shoot with just the original factory stocks.

Good idea. I will do that. 12/30 is my pick up day.

I used to stalk a shop called Martin Rettings in Culver City CA. Friend worked there and he told me when they got in enough finish challenged pistols they would send them out as a batch to have them parkerized. Claimed they sold much better after the treatment.
