Pata negra/ Jamon iberica

Texas Star,

Now the aggrieved Basque harpy wishes me to tell you that a Catalan vi negre may be more pleasing to your palate

Well, despite her having called me the son of a thousand whores, I'll try to find her a song by some Basque singers whose music I like. :D I'll post it here, if I find it soon enough. I bought their CD.

Suggest to her (if you dare) that if she drinks estate-bottled French wines out of a glass instead of a shoe, she might like them better. :) I'm referring to well known houses from the Haut-Medoc, not to French vin ordinaire, which modestly priced US wines easily triump. I think our moderately priced wines from CA and WA are the best in the world for the money, although some Chilean Cabernet gives us a hard run!

I avoided mentioning German wines here, as they are Riesling for the better ones, and I was mainly thinking of dry, often red, table wine. But I am very fond of Spatlese and sweeter Riesling and better WA and CA Riesling. Also, Alsatian Riesling. I like it with turkey, pork, and salmon, and with fruit or cheese. (Usually Havarti or Muenster for the cheese.)

The reds from Spain that I had in mind that I've heard good about are often from the Torres family. I suspect they resemble cote du rhone French wines. They come in Burgundy-shaped bottles, not the Bordeaux-shaped bottles of Rioja wines. And you just draw the corks; you don't need to undo any chicken wire first! :D :D (I had to do that with Riojas.)

For my life, I durst not suggest ANYTHING French in this household. I did not survive 30 years military service by stumbling about in mine fields. As you no doubt have gleaned, and I all too often experience, Shakespeare obviously knew Basque women when he penned; ( Petruchio: Who knows not where a wasp does wear his sting? In his tail. Katherine: In his tongue.). I have found myself victimized more than once by that rapier stinger.

To your credit, you have offered an olive branch by expressing an interest, however meager in autonomous Basque culture. As we speak, she is perched like a bird of prey at the far end of the dining table awaiting your musical offering. I pray for both our sakes it renders the effect of balm we desperately need at this moment. :D

Hi-

I posted the song in a separate thread, "A Song For the Basque Harpy", I think. It's by a group called La Oreja de van Gogh. The song is, "Inmortal", quite colorful and cute.

If your wife recognizes the city where it was filmed, tell me. I think it may be Valparaiso. I'm basing that on a comment under the song. The umbrellas in the video seem to have a boomerang quality. At the rate that I lose umbrellas, I need to get one of those...

Tell your wife that I once discussed the Spanish gun industry with Col. Charles Askins, who was once US military attache to Spain and who wrote a fair amount about their arms. The industry is mostly up around Eibar and Elgoibar, in the Basque region. Does that get me forgiven for the wine comment? :D

I was amused by the Shakespeare bit. I was married to a woman with a wasp in her tongue. I was frequently stung by it. My favorite Shakespeare is either, MacBeth or, Julius Caesar. I can never decide.
