I took ownership of a cosmetic challenged highway patrolman yesterday (surface rust on the cylinder and a couple small spots on the frame). It's my first pinned & recessed revolver. It came with pachmayr grips and no box. It was originally tagged at 700 dollars, and included two speed loaders and case.

My son tipped me off about it last week. I made a couple trips by the pawn shop over the weekend, but the employee I wanted to deal with wasn't there. But she was yesterday and so was the 28. My son is now bothered he didn't buy it.

While the finish isn't pristine, the lockup, internals, and bore are. The included pic is right after purchase.

It looks nice!!
Try Thailand made grips off of fleabay. They are surprisingly well fit and made!

Congrats are in order for both FLgolfer and tlawler.
Yes, I'd think either checkered magnas or checkered football Targets.
And as previously posted, depending on year made and whether S or N prefix, etc., may or may not have diamond screw holes???

What's correct on a P&R 28? Magnas?
The standard production stocks for the Model 28 were Magna's, but a dealer or law enforcement agency could order them with target stocks. The only way to know which is correct for one that does not have it's original box or perhaps stocks that are numbered to the particular Model 28 would be to make an inquiry with S&W. They have records to match the serial number with the configuration in which the revolver left the factory.

Congratulations! It would be nice enough for me to enjoy. Bought a 28 no dash 6" from 1960. It came with Goodyear Grips too. Now wears appropriate wood. Enjoy! Bob

Thanks, bananaman. I have purchased a set of period correct magnas from one of our forum members, as well as a set of Target grips from eBay. Hopefully, both will arrive this week.

If a moderator sees this, can he please move the thread to the 1961 - 1980 section?
