Pawn Shops

I wouldn't cry if there was a pic posted of that. Or a few more here from this thread... ;)

Here is the gun with the Hogues that it came with, I gotta get a photo with the Kurac's.

A couple years ago I kept seeing a 1974 Telecaster hanging in a pawn shop. It was blonde, had a case and a maple neck. I had a blemish on the body like someone had a decorative sticker there once. It was $2400 but no one ever bought it for the couple years I was hanging out there. The town is suffering badly with stores closing down. No one can afford a classic old guitar right now so I bet it would go for a lot less if it's still there.

If you know any good pawnshops in Houston for firearms. I would like to know which ones. I have only found junk.

Hi Rick. I used to have good luck with finding revolvers in a few hock shops in Houston. No need to look for good autos there as the locals snap them up. The best pawn shops for revolvers are in the parts of town that you really don't want to be in, especially after dark. Look in the phone book for Mason's Pawn. There are two, one on Scott Street and the other I think is on Cullen. Also, try some of the pawn shops on Telephone Road. Another good one is in Alvin but I can't remember the name. Good hunting.

Out this way only a couple of the local pawn shops carry guns. Low end stores with high end prices.

I've picked up a number of good deals at my favorite pawn shop in the last few years, including a "pre-29" at an unbelievably low price (won't repeat it here, so nobody will castigate me for not paying enough and tell me to go back and give them more money), a beautiful pre-64 Winchester Model 70 pre-war transitional in excellent condition for a pittance, a 629 for an extremely good price, and others. Great place to buy, and the owner always treats me right. If selling, one must remember that the only way they can give great deals is by acquiring items at a very low price.

a lefty just apraised on antique road show for 40k.......

was in the local shop this week, in walks this DUDE with some cases, all the guns looked new, one was a Benelli M2, Beretta and a couple rifles, I'd guess about 4k worth, he asked if he could borrow 300 for all of it, of course they said yes. You don't know how hard it was for me to keep my mouth shut.

Think it would feel a little warm to the touch for my tastes. No way anyone is that little informed on that many guns. Sounds to much like a dump and cash fast. :(

I like the tools. got 4 crafstman 3/8 drive ratchet handles and one 1/2 drive handle for $1.00 each. Sockets were a buck a piece and I spent a happy half hour scrounging for craftsman, and snap sockets. always are looking for 7/16 1/2 3/8 9/16's wrenches too. Anything craftsman or snap on. Ridgid Pipe Wrenches, the list is endless

That's pretty common. Sometimes they are going out of town and figure they'd be safer in the pawn shop vault. I also had it happen when folks were getting a divorce and one didnt want the other to get to them.

Browning Auto 5 Light 12 made in Belgium. Right place at the right time. Both barrels, no rust anywhere, all the papers, case with only minimal wear outside, even the key is still in the little manilla envelope. Something like $200 I think, I forget at this point.

I will give you double your money back for it.

Rick, I hit the ones in Alvin, Clear lake, League City, Pearland, and Friendswood. I will admit the pickings are slim but I sometimes stumble across a bargain. I recently bought a 1970 vintage Remington 700 in 7mm Mag with a 1x4 Redfield scope for $275 at the shop on 45 south and FM518. The metal was in decent condition but the stock needed refinishing. I stripped it and gave it several coats of Tru-Oil and it looks pretty good now. It shoots good too. I also found a decent 1972 vintage Winchester Model 94 for $255 at the shop in Pearland. They also had an unconverted 3 screw Ruger Single Six in .22 mag that I passed on for the same price. These prices were after negotiation. Usually the best bargains are the last thing that I am looking for.

Pawn shops are my best friend. Bought all sorts of stuff over the years. List include:
Win. 61 smoothbore, shooter quality $375.00
Cold Steel Tanto w/sheath $8.00 (They thought it was a knock off)
Really nice Morgan silver dollar $5.00
Pre model 25 55 Target $290.00
Pre mod. 14 heavy bbl $200.00
Mod. 19-2 nkl in box $115.00
AKAH 30-06 rifle ,dbl set triggers, Hubertus 6x scope (post & bar reticle) w/ claw mounts $125.00
Win mod 37 410 ga. for my grandson $110.00 A 98% gun.
Lefever 12 ga dbl, shooter grade, broken butt plate $200.00
I think my best deal was a hardly any finish shooter grade pre mod. 15 that lingered in the case for months. I finally swapped them out of the diamond targets and gave them a pair of non diamond magnas. Still it lingered then disappeared and reappeared with a set of S&W fingergroove combats on it. Same price $115.00. I bought it, sold the combats for $100.00 and put the diamond targets back on it.
Most of my guns includings S&W came out of pawn shops.
Tools, oh my gosh, see below
Stihl straight shaft weedeater $40.00 Had it 10 years and works great
Echo chain saw, new no gas ever put in it $100.00
Small cutting torch set with all tools, docs, accessories $125.00
Compound mitre saw $60.00
Gas generator, $50.00 hardly used
3000 psi Pressure washer with all nozzles. Works every time. $100.00
10 wrenches box end ratchet style $48.00
Wifes jewelry:
Phillip Stein double face ladies watch with diamonds $140.00 (retail $2800.00) They thought it was a knock off but still didn't get it when they tested the stones and they tested "real"
2.0 carat solitary. Let's just say it was half price for the quality. The wife has over 5 carats of diamonds on one hand and I have just a little of $5K in all of it.
The funny part is that my wiife used to work retail jewelry and never thought about pawn shops and had never been in one until she met me and now never goes into retail. She found out the secret to buying. Go where the bargains are.
My jewelry:
Elgin pocket watch size 16s, like new no wear, didn't run, $20.00. Cost me $135.00 to clean and repair but appraised at $375.00
Tag Heuer mens watches, 2, one with black dial and one white, $200.00 each. Retail is $1800.00 on each.
Bulova Accutron 1961, keeps perfect time $40.00 & had to pay tax.
Different wrist watches, Bulova, Elgins, etc. All work great and none over $50.00.
Yeah, I like pawn shops. Doesn't hurt my feelings to buy used.
Bargains are out there. Keep in mind some of these purchases go back some years, but were always good deals then.

Funny thing, my wife and I laugh when she gets a bargain on jewelry because my first wife would not darken the door of a pawn shop because some one might see her and she couldn't live it down. Oh well.

I unzipped the bag and staring out at me was a 10 1/2' python...ALIVE!!!

There was an older gentleman in a little town up the road who had a gun shop. It wasn't a pawnshop, but he sold and repaired guns. One of the nicest old gents you'd ever meet, but he was a character from way back. He sold out and moved to Montana because his town of 1000 people was 'just gettin' too crowded.'

I passed his shop one day, and he had a sign out front that said 'WE BUY RATTLESNAKES'. A week or so later I passed by again, and the sign said, 'WE BUY DEAD RATTLESNAKES'.

-----------discharged from the army-Fort Riley Kansas-1959-a person could not possess a personal weapon on the Fort Riley grounds, so my first stop-just outside the main gate-a pawn shop--purchased a Winchester model 61-.22 pump--like new with 1/2 box of shells-$18.00

Houston Rick,

When I was working, I stopped in almost every pawn shop I came across. My best deal was a 3" Mod 66-3 at a pawn shop in College Station...$349.95 OTD. I've also bought several guns at pawn shops around Spring and The Woodlands at reasonable prices. I enjoy the hunt but at my age I pretty much have all my itches scratched and I'm starting to consider whether or not I really need all this hardware. However...there may be just one more deal out there that I can't resist.
