I went ahead and ran to the range and tried out some of my .38 spl loads using PB. I was asked to post the results, so here they are.

I shot about 30 rounds of 158 grain hard cast SWCs loaded with 3.5 grains of PB. Hodgdon calls for 3.2 to 3.7 grains. I used a medium roll crimp on the canelure. They were fired from a Smith 10-5 4" barrel. Accuracy was good. Recoil was low. I tried to determine position sensitivity by shooting a group of 6 while first pointing the gun downward and tapping on it, then carefully raising to level and firing. I then tried a group tilting the weapon up, tapping, and then carefully lowering to level. I then did a group without tilting prior to shooting.

I was unable to detect any difference between any of the routines. FWIW, the 3.5 grains fills about 1/4 of the cartridge.

As to dirtiness of the gun afterwards, I would have to say it may have been a tad dirtier than Universal. It was not excessively dirty IMO.

The data calls for somewhat lower MV in the PB loads, but as I am hunting paper, that is not an issue.

My initial impression is that I really like this powder for .38. The reduced recoil is a real plus for me, as my daughter is getting into shooting, and may be more comfortable with the .38 in a milder load. Of course, the fact that it was available was the deciding factor at this point. I am down to the dregs of my Universal.

I looked up the data for 9mm using some home cast 125 grain LCN bullets. The data from the website seemed a little low to me, but I went by the data and loaded up 10 at start, and 10 a few tenths of a grain higher. The next step up would be max. This application calls for a rather narrow powder range.

The start loads would not operate the slide at all, and accuracy was poor. The higher loads operated the slide, but not every time. Accuracy was a little better, but did not seem to be as good as I would like. Leading was none existent.

I will try with some Berry's plated I have on hand. The data for them looks more reasonable to me. If I can get to the outdoor range sometime soon, I may try some of the homecast using the max load, and run it by the chronograph. I don't like using max loads. I insist on weighing every round, and that gets old quick.
 
Good report.

I loaded some 9mm last weekend and had the same results with lower loads. I had to go up to a higher load until I got decent ejection. Make sure you check your COAL. I was making mine the same length as some www ammo I bought but found I had to go much shorter along with the higher load for them to work well.

I've used PB for light target loads in the .38 Special for over 30 years with my favorite load 3.2gr under a Speer swaged 158gr SWC. I started using it after finding that it works very well in hunting loads for my 12 gauge.

If you spot any on the shelves, you better buy it while you can. Supposedly Hodgdon is discontinuing it because there are better powders on the market.
 
Don't want to rain on your parade if you're happy with PB but I have
used it before and I don't plan to ever again. As to stocking up on it
before it's unavailable; there are lots of better powders out there. If
you owned a chronograph like I do and ran your test for position
sensitivity with PB like I have done you wouldn't be looking to stock
up on it.
 
Sorry to hear it did not do well in the 9mm as yet.......

Being a high pressure load maybe a short/minimum oal and a
compressed load ( if safe ) with the PB powder might be the way to go ?
I have noticed with my 9mm plated bullets that loads just below the bullets base
seem to shoot better for my target loads.
I have yet to try out Fac. Dup. loadings in the 33-35,000 psi range, yet.

As shotgun powders go, PB is a very slow burner and like most slower powders, does best with more heat. Heat comes from pressure and pressure comes from powder, so the more powder (up to the maximum recommendation, of course), the better PB will burn. In other words, it works best at near maximum powder charges but then you're generating more recoil.

I used to use nothing but PB in my trap loads and shot over 10,000 rounds per year with it. When I got back into handguns several years ago, I had 15 pounds of PB on hand so I called Hodgdon's to see what its drawbacks would be in a handgun. The gentleman with whom I spoke told me it works great in the .45ACP but the barrel-cylinder gap of revolvers allows pressure to drop enough that poor combustion can result and that's exactly what I experienced. I did try it in my 1911s but found it very dirty, which was a real surprise to me as it burns very cleanly in shotshells.

A shotgun powder that works very well for me in all my revolver target loads from .38 Special through .44 Magnum is Clays. Universal Clays is another slow burner like PB and covered my hands, gun and shooting bench with little tan discs of unburned powder. There was so much of it left in the empty cases that some got under the ejector star during ejection, preventing the cylinder from closing. The fellow from Hodgdon's told me it is not the powder he would recommend for anything but hot hunting loads, again because of its slow-burning characteristics and its need for a lot of heat to burn completely.

"Standard" Clays is much faster-burning and is accurate and clean for me. Just 2.3 grains under a 148-grain hollow-base wadcutter makes for an accurate and pleasant shooting load in my .38 Specials and powder orientation doesn't seem to affect it.

Another update. I loaded up some 9mm rounds using the start data for some plated 124 grain plated HB bullets. The loads for these looked a lot more reasonable.

I ran a full mag through my compact 9mm with good results. All functioned normally, except one stovepipe on the last round. Recoil felt normal for this weapon, and accuracy was decent. It is not unusual for me to have a few stovepipes with start loads in this weapon, particularly with the slower powders.

Barrel seemed to have a little more residue than normal, but was gone with a single run through using a patch over a brass jag with a little frog lube on it. I use this procedure to quick clean a barrel after a range session using just a few rounds.

I will bump up the powder by .2 grains and see how they perform. If experience is any indicator, accuracy will improve somewhat, and they should operate the slide reliably.
 
Please re-read the first four words of my post above then compare PB's burning rate to some of the other shotgun-specific powders on that list.

Gotcha Ed. Thanks for the clarification. I haven't done any shotgun shells yet so I'm unfamiliar with the powder used for them. I was just looking at the overall burn rate for all powders.

PB can be made to burn completely in low doses when a filler is used.
One of my standard, very accurate "gallery" loads in 44 is 4.5 grains PB and either Grex or Pufflon
to fill the case for about a half bullet shank of compression (240 SWC).
Total combustion.
It is a lot more work and probably not applicable to the 9mm.
