I have a New never Fired 629-3 Performance Center carry comp. . When I purchased this many many years ago I do not believe the correct grips were on the gun. Can anyone here confirm what grips shipped with this gun? I think only 400-500 Were made . Also I have seen these in both the silver PC case and the blue plastic case.... was this also possible. Thanks.

The Roy Jinks letter on my PC 629-3 states "...and combat finger groove wood grip. The production run for this group of 3 inch Model 629 was 430 units in the serial range PCJ0000-PCJ0428."

Hope this helps and enjoy an exceptional fine firearm.

So a PCJ Serial prefix. Is the frame engraved on the side plate with the PC logo?

Everything that I can find seems to indicate the old style factory combat grips in a Rosewood or Walnut laminate. It looks like some people are keeping the grips and trying to swap them out for current altamont rose wood laminate combats.

There were two runs of the PC 629-3 Carry Comp (Mag Comp). The first run was as described above and the second run has a serial number prefix of HMC. Mine is HMC-062.

I was told that Lew Horton ordered the first batch and S&W made approximately 495 frames (the numbers are not definite). The remaining frames were kept in the factory and some years later they were "re-discovered" and Lew Horton was contacted and they ordered the rest of them. I don't remember the year, but S&W was making 629-5 guns at the same time, so it was several years later. They were not serial numbered when made and the new guns were given the HMC prefix and began at either zero or one. If memory serves this run goes through HMC 068.

I bought mine several years ago and it came without a box and had Badger finger groove laminate grips on it. They did not fit my hands so I put a set of Hogue "banana" grips on mine. Its a great shooter, particularly with .44 Special ammo. I qualified with it and carried it for a while until I saw one sell for over $5K.
