I am a fan of Pelé. He was much beloved by his nation and hugely respected by the rest of the planet. As a young teen I had that bicycle kick picture that I had cut out of a magazine taped to my bedroom wall.
He was one of the soccer world's greatest ambassadors.

Yes, another of my heroes passes.
82 is a good run but I would have figured he ran so many miles playing soccer that he should have stayed in shape until at least 150! But I just read it was the cancer that got him. That’s pretty hard to outrun.
Thinking back the best I can, I really don’t think I even knew there was such a sport as soccer until Pele came around with that fancy-pants kick (I tried it once and landed so hard on my back it knocked the wind out of me for an hour or two) and his magical footwork. I remember commenting, “the cowboys should give him a try-out and see if he can make field-goals!”

I don't know much about him personally,
but have heard he was as good a person off the field as he was an athlete on the field.

Some may remember the 1981 movie “Victory” with Pele and Stallone. Nazis play Soccer against a POW team. I saw it, don’t remember much about it. Probably Pele’s only film appearance.

Some years back, Ohio State had a superb place kicker who had been a pro soccer player. I don't remember his name.

Pete Gogolak (Hungary) was the first soccer player to turn kicker in the NFL. He is still the leading scorer for the NY Giants.
Other soccer-style kickers -- mostly Europeans -- soon followed. Garo Yepremian (Cyprus) started kicking for the Detroit Lions midway through the '66 season. Then came Jan Stenerud (Norway) to the Kansas City Chiefs in 1967, Bobby Howfield (England) to the Denver Broncos in '68, Horst Muhlmann (Germany) to the Cincinnati Bengals in '69 and Toni Fritsch (Austria) to the Dallas Cowboys in '71.

The guy could play.
Many of us were asked to play american football in High school to become kicker. Some went most stayed because we loved Soccer! RIP Pele.

as a grade school soccer player, I wanted to play like Pele... never happened.. he is a soccer legend and will be missed.. RIP Pele
