People who don't use the passing lane to pass

I'm glad these people are out there, they like the texting crowd, cell phone users, drunks, prescription and illegal drug users, people feeding their faces, blinking tail light people and the unlicensed operators, make driving a challenge everyday.:D

Hmmmm....sounds like you're describing a drive through Framingham.

The inconsideration of left lane drivers insults my being.

I once read the results of a study, many folks who have an overpowering need to control do like driving slowly in the left lane. I have an overpowering need to get down the road.....

Once in a while the supreme being steps in. Several years ago when driving back to the St. Louis Metro area I and a few miles of other drivers got to follow one who was tied to an 18 wheelers rear bumper, this went on for about 75 miles. Both were doing 55 in a 70. I worked my way up and honked, his response was a sneer.

Just when We were getting to the expanded 6 lane a tractor trailer blew a retread. It spider webbed the jackals windshield, took off both wipers, drivers side mirror and but some dents in body panels. I honked as I went by, no sneer. Just big wide eyes and disbelief.

I mind my business and give other drivers a pass anymore. I try and ignore stupidity on the road as I figure if they make me mad they won and I lost. I never, ever flip anyone off either anymore.
Such was not always the case as I was a hot head and speeder in my younger days. I worked commission only doing service work and road time I didn't get paid for. So I was always in a hurry and those hogging the left lane or slowing me down cost me money or so I figured. I paid a lot of speeding tickets and got into it with a few drivers but fortunately nothing serious became of it. I finally did have to force myself to slow down and start getting along better with stupid drivers.
It really hit home though once I got my pistol permit and started carrying one. I didn't want my actions to ever appear like I started an incident and became a real polite driver. Now I'm retired and shouldn't have to be in a hurry anymore. I can stick mostly to the slow lane now and let the world pass me by.

Pulling In

On lightly traveled Route 11 here in NE OH (speed limit 70), I'm cruising in the outside lane at 70. One car about a mile behind me closing very slowly. No other cars in sight.

He's going about 72 when he passes me then pulls into my lane no more than 50 yards in front of me and maintains his 72 mph.

Sometimes, I just swear at him. Other times, I'll zoom around him at about 90 and get a few miles in front of him. Maybe not too smart but it sends him a message and makes me feel good.

With no traffic, I pass a guy and give him a mile before getting back into the cruising lane. In any event, never less than .5 mile.

PASSING LANE BLUES

in a 70 mph zone, If you are doing 70, you CERTAINLY do not belong in the left lane, as most others will want to do 70-80. It's none of your concern, just watch your own driving and don't try and punish/ or teach the world a lesson with your antagonistic, passive/aggressive type behavior. If you keep looking for trouble like that, you will surely find it.LEAD, FOLLOW, OR GET OUT OF THE WAY! Try the sandwich, or granny lanes. As the name implies the PASSING lane is for passing, not to screw with other people because you have some ISSUES.

"......in a 70 mph zone, If you are doing 70, you CERTAINLY do not belong in the left lane."

hangnoose,

Please notice I wrote "...cruising in the outside lane at 70." The left lane is the inside lane.

Apologies accepted.....

This has been my pet peeve for the last 50 years, and if anything, its getting worse over time. Part of the problem is that more and more people on the road do not have a driver's license, feel safer in the left lane, and if ticketed just tell the judge that they can't afford to pay and are let off with a verbal warning (I have seen this happen in traffic court numerous times over the years, in several different states).

The real answer is allowing us to shoot the slow left lane drivers as a justifiable homicide. Wouldn't take long to get folks back into the right lane! Or seriously, if our laws were like the laws in Germany, where if a faster driver in the left lane crashes into you (unless you are blocked by traffic in front of you), you are considered at fault for failing to yield to faster traffic in the passing lane (at least this was the law back 30 years ago when I lived in Germany).

NOT, speaking of anyone in particular!

Certainly NOT YOU A-37. Did it used to & sometimes still get me irked, SURE, but especially if armed I try and remind myself I am trying to act like a MATURE adult, it isn't worth the stress/aggravation/potential escalation & falls into the life's too short category. As mentioned If that is one of your biggest problems, feel blessed.

I figure if they are making the time to slow me down, I will make the time to return the favor.

Glad to know I'm not the only one. I drive an auto as I drive a motorcycle. Offensive, w/plenty of throttle to put myself in a favourable position. The speed police justify their abuse of the left lane by assuring themselves that by driving the speed limit they are conforming to the intent if not the letter of the law. They aren't familiar w/prohibiting the flow of traffic if they are going the posted limit.

On two-lane double yellow & posted speed are merely suggestions for those that have nothing under the hood, are too old to merge into traffic/limber enough to turn their head and look for traffic when backing out on the street and leisurely drivers on the Sunday cruise to nowhere.

Some folks will pull over to get me off their arse. Others are oblivious to anyone else as they're too self-absorbed in their own little world. Hot Springs Village is full off retirees and State Hwy 5 & 7 is clogged w/them. You pick them out easy enough because regardless of speed or posted speed they'll hit/ride the brake all the way from before the beginning of the curve until the end. Then, the men mostly, in order to prove their prowess will speed up on straight stretches where others would wish to pass.

It's why I run 93 octane and flog the turbo at will. Plus, I can't see around SUV/trucks & do not wish to focus on a rear bumper and brake lights if at all possible. If there's half a dozen in front of me I'll have to fall in line.

Freeway/interstate I'm coming up behind you and will toggle my high beams on/off as a hint that you really do not need to camp-out in the passing lane. I realize there's a lot of older drivers that do not see well and quite possibly taking prescription medication daily.

Once on a bike I approached HSV and an older man pulled out blocking my lane making a space for himself to get into the flow of traffic going opposite of me. In haste I slowed down and flipped him the byrd. He reciprocated in kind. I laughed so hard as he put a huge smile on my face. I only hope if I reach my 80's and am still driving that I'll have the spunk/quick wit to offer the finger to young whippersnappers/neer-do-wells driving like the dickens going to hell in a hand basket.

Unfortunately the odds are closing that I'll be beeping my horn, "Road Hog"!

Oh Magoo, you've done it again.

I certainly hope that someone pulling back into the slow lane 150 feet ahead of you doesn't really get you that worked up as that's well past a comfortably safe merging distance.

The drivers who get all worked up over someone passing them need to work on their anger management. Someone else going faster than them doesn't personally affect them but if they are going slower and impeding the fast lane it does affect everyone else on the road. Speed does not kill, passive and inattentive driving does.

What's the odds? When I see the two-step brake light boogie I punch it to the floor.

All the easier to pit you into the median.

I think there's a Red Sovine tune in that somewhere along the lines of, The Phantom 309.

Tailgaters are worse than left lane bandits.

This one annoys me - Speed limit is 70, I'm doing between 75-80 and passing a train of cars doing 70-75. Then someone comes up behind me doing well over 80 and starts tailgaiting me. I'm already close to 10 over, so just wait your turn! I'll move over when I get around them.
