performance 5906

I am new to this forum but not new to firearms. I have recently become interested in adding a 1rst/3rd generation Smith chambered in 9mm to the collection. I found this "performance" model on Gunbroker and I am interested in it but I have questions to the experts here:


1. Is it really worth $1300 given that pedestrian 5906 models go for $400-500?

2. Would I notice a difference shooting the two?

If you're new to the 3rd gen Smiths I'm not sure I would jump straight to the PC guns. Using my 6904 and Shorty 9 as examples the Shorty is clearly a cut above as far as bells and whistles...fit and finish along with barrel bushing, adj sights, ect. make it a VERY nice gun, but...I sure do love my 6904 (same configuration in non-performance center) at 1/3 the price! Both are bet your life reliable and fun to shoot.

For me I would have the standard gun first just so I can shoot and shoot without concern for anything outside of ammo! I tend to baby my Shorty 9 (along with a few other guns) and don't shoot it much...not that I'm opposed to shooting it but I didn't buy it for a regular shooter, I bought it 'cause it's so cool!

The PC guns are great but IMHO you have to really LOVE the platform to dish out the $$ they can bring. Give the standard 3rd gens a run and then see where you're at.

Let us know what you decide.

You could also consider a TSW version. A step above the standard 5906 but not a full PC model either.

That's what I did. The TSW line was probably the best in-between from your plain jane 5906 and the PC guns.

That's what got me started, & hooked, on the 3rd Gens. I found a PC 845 at a LGS & wondered how I missed these guns when they were new (probably had something to do with raising a family & trying to paying the bills.) Just superb guns. Buying long distance is kinda scary though. You'll definitely notice a difference in the quality of their actions. I don't know if you'll be able to shoot it twice as good though.

Didn't see the linked gun ........ but I've got a Performance Center 5906.... Serial # starts with DPAxxx......PC brought them out for use in IDPA matches.... these guns have de-cockers rather than safeties.

They are sweet guns .... all steel so they are heavy but in 9mm they shoot like a .22.....

If you can afford it.... I would grab it..... they don't come along very often.

But you will soon "need" a second stock 5906 or 915 or 6906 or 3913.........

Just went to Gun Broker saw a Performance Center 5906 "Shorty 9" for $925........ which might be a good deal...... why it's labeled a 5906 I can't figure out it has a 6904 frame and 3.5 " barrel.........

D--- I've got one in the safe........ as a back-up to my carry PC 690? reverse two tone......... got it years ago used but anib; but the LGS lost the box..... mine came with 2 12 round mags and 1 15 round w/ the +2 adapter all PC marked.


Found the one for $1300. It is the DPA version PC w/ de-cocker......1 10rd mag.

Also saw a long slide 5" 5906 for $2100....... very limited in the US the slides were originally made for European export

To me they both seem high..... but I bought my PC guns in the 90s...... used but anib for $500-600
